Massage Bar Recipe for Sore Muscles

How to make a homemade massage bar recipe with herbal infused oils and essential oils.  Not only does this promote your body feeling better, but it also feels great as you use it due to the massage bar mold that I used.

DIY Massage Lotion Bar Sore Muscles Home Remedy

A friend asked for a sore muscle massage bar DIY a few weeks ago, so I started formulating one with infused oils and essential oils.

Then my Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box came, and it had a solid massage bar recipe in it.

I know several of you have subscribed to the boxes, so I want to give you some ways that you can use their recipes and modify them slightly for a more advanced recipe.

I love that their recipes are easy to make for the beginner.  If you've been making things for a while, you might be ready to take it to the next level.

Simply Earth's aromatherapists formulate their recipes, so I don't change the amounts of the recipes.  However, sometimes I add things that won't change the recipe or make substitutions.

For this massage bar DIY, I kept the same recipe but used infused oils instead.  I wanted to infuse my herbs with arnica, turmeric, and ginger to give this sore muscles home remedy a little more oomph.

Is a Massage Bar the Same as a Lotion Bar?

This massage bar recipe is very similar to a lotion bar in that it has an oil and beeswax to harden in.  A lotion bar is usually flat and is meant to moisturize the skin.

A solid massage bar recipe can be a solid bar, but I really like the nubs on this mold.  It really helps it feel good on tired and sore muscles as you massage the skin.

What Does a Massage Bar Do?

A massage oil bar recipe is similar to a massage oil with therapeutic benefits from the essential oils and, in this recipe, the infused oils.

However, it's a solid so it's less messy.  I used coconut oil and beeswax, so it's a softer bar that melts when it comes into contact with your skin.

The nubs on the mold feel good and help boost circulation as you massage your sore muscles.

How to Use Homemade Massage Bar Recipe

This solid massage bar recipe is easy to use.  Simply rub on sore or tired muscles as needed.

Rubbing the area helps boost circulation to help you feel better.  Then the essential oils provide aromatherapy benefits, and the infused oil also has benefits.

Essential Oils for Solid Massage Bar Recipe

I used the same essential oils that Simply Earth used for their massage lotion bar recipe: Relief, Copaiba, and Cajeput.

Relief is a blend with eucalyptus, peppermint, copaiba, juniper berry, and rosemary essential oils.  It's often used for massages because of the benefits of the oils and it doesn't smell medicinal.

Copaiba is my favorite essential oil for a sore muscles home remedy.  It supports joint function and, according to a study, massage with copaiba and Deep Blue oils in coconut oil was more effective than a massage with coconut oil alone.

Copaiba is also said to reduce inflammation.  Copiaba has been shown to reduce inflammatory cytokines n mice, but more studies are needed for humans.

Copaiba is a resin, so it's very thick.  I either rub the bottle in my hands for a few minutes or place it under my arm to heat it up so it drops easier.

Cajeput has cineole in it.  Cineole can create a warm sensation to reduce irritation and relieve pain from sore muscles.

Using Herbal Infused Oils for Massage Oil Bar Recipe

I followed the DIY massage lotion bar recipe from Simply Earth, but I infused the almond oil and coconut oil with arnica, ginger, and turmeric.

Arnica is often used in a sore muscles home remedy because it can reduce swelling and pain.  It should not be taken by mouth, and do not use it on broken skin.

Ginger contains salicylic acid that prevents your nerves from making prostaglandins, which reduces discomfort and pain.  According to a study, ginger is shown to be anti inflammatory, which can reduce pain.

Turmeric contains curcumin, which is what makes it yellow and gives it anti-inflammatory properties.  Turmeric is often taken as a supplement and used topically to reduce inflammation.  Check out my homemade turmeric soap recipe for more ways to use turmeric.

How to Infused Oils for DIY Massage Lotion Bar

Since this massage bar recipe has coconut oil in it, you'll have to do a warm infusion.  To do this, I took a 16 ounce mason jar and put about 1/2 cup of arnica, 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder, and 1 tablespoon of grated ginger.

Then I added 2 tablespoons of almond oil and 4 tablespoons of coconut oil.  I added double what I needed because you'll lose some oil when you strain it.  I saved the leftover infused oils to use in a future recipe.

Then place the jar on a canning ring or some other heat safe object to elevate it.  You can also use a double boiler to infuse the oils.  Fill a pan with water to cover the oil (or close to covering the oil level).

Heat on medium heat for 4 hours to infuse the oils.  Then strain through cheesecloth.

To continue with the homemade massage bar recipe, I put 3 tablespoons of the infused oil back on the double boiler to reheat and added the beeswax to melt it.
