Unicorn Rubber Duck Soap

Although my kids are a little older, I still like to make them cute kids soap bar recipes like this unicorn soap recipe.

This is an easy beginner melt and pour soap recipe, and your kids will love it!  I used a unicorn rubber ducky, but you can easily swap it for a rubber duck in your child's favorite theme.

We'll talk about choosing a scent and how to make a rubber duck soap so it doesn't separate.

How Do You Make Kids Soap Fun?

Kids don't always want to wash their hands or their body, but you can encourage them to get clean with a kids soap bar.

Using a fun colored or themed soap can help kids want to wash up.  If it smells good, they'll be even more likely to use the soap.

Here are are some fun kid friend soap recipe ideas for you to try:

Is Glycerin Soap Good for Kids?

Yes, glycerin soap is a good for a kid friendly soap recipe.  It's gentle on skin, so it won't dry out their skin.

Glycerin soap is made with vegetable oils and has a neutral pH, so it won't make the skin itchy.  Most brands don't have alcohol to dry out the skin.

Essential Oils for Kids Soap

You can scent this handcrafted rubber duck soap with essential oils or fragrance oils.  However, if you use essential oils, it's important to choose kid safe essential oils.

Some essential oils are safe for kids 2 and older, and others are safe for kids 10 and up.  Don't use essential oils for kids under 2 unless directed by a physician.

Simply Earth labels their essential oils with a 2+ or 10+ so you know which ones are safe.  Plant Therapy has a separate section for kid safe single oils and blends.

You can also use fragrance oils to scent your unicorn rubber duck soap.  Nature's Oil has natural fragrance oil that smell amazing and are made from natural ingredients.

They have fun scents like Captain Crunch Berry and Monkey Farts as well as several fruit scents.

The Plant Guru on Etsy also has several fun fragrance oil options.

Whichever scent you choose, make sure it's skin safe and safe for a kids soap bar.

How to Embed Toys in Kids Soap Bar

Embedding a toy to make a rubber duck soap is fairly easy, but I have some tricks to help you.  You can also check out my tips for layering melt and pour soap or how to make melt and pour soap with embeds for more tips.

The reason that I made this unicorn soap bar a three layer soap isn't just for looks, although I like the rainbow effect.

The bottom layer is a shelf of sorts that holds the unicorn rubber duck.  The other two layers help secure it in place.

It's important to use rubbing alcohol to spray the soap every time you pour.  It helps the layers stick together.

You can also take a knife and score the soap with lines before pouring the next layer.  This helps the soap get into those cut lines and adhere better.  Use rubbing alcohol even if you score the soap.

Rubber Duck Soap Additives

I used whipped soap along with melt and pour soap.  It's optional, but it makes the unicorn rubber duck soap lighter.

I used mica to color the kid friendly soap recipe.  It's a natural colorant that's safe for kids and won't stain your tub.

You can add a little bit of coconut oil for more lather.  Check out how to make melt and pour soap lather more.

You can also add a little bit of shea butter or a carrier oil for extra moisturizing.  You can add up to a teaspoon per pound of a butter or oil.  Learn about different carrier oils and their benefits.

Unicorn Rubber Duck Soap Supplies

Here's what you need to make a unicorn soap bar:

Melt and Pour Soap - You can use your favorite melt and pour soap.  I use Crafty Bubbles soap, but you can also find melt and pour soap at Nature's Oils or Amazon.  If you use a clear base, you'll get brighter colors, and white base will give you pastel colors.

Whipped Soap Base - This is optional, but I like to use whipped soap base for a kids soap bar because it makes it lighter.  You can omit it and use more soap base.

Polysorbate 80 - Polysorbate 80 helps stabilize the fragrance.  It also moisturizes your skin.  It has an EWG rating of 1, so it's safe to use in a kid friendly soap recipe.

Mica Powder - I used yellow, purple, and pink mica powders as a natural colorant.  You can also use soap colorant, but avoid food coloring because it can stain the skin.

Fragrance - I used a kid safe blend of essential oils.  If you use an essential oil, make sure it's kid safe.  Also ensure any fragrance oils are safe for the skin.  I like the natural fragrance oils from Nature's Oils.

Mold - I love this rectangle silicone mold because it's versatile.

Rubbing Alcohol - I keep a small 2 ounce spray bottle with rubbing alcohol to spritz the soap.  This helps pop any bubbles on the top, and it also helps soap layers stick together.

Measuring Cups - You will need 3 microwave safe measuring cups.  You can use a Pyrex measuring cup or a soap measuring cup with a spout.

Unicorn Rubber Duck - I got mine here.  You can replace it with another style in about the same size.

How Do You Make Unicorn Rubber Duck Soap?

Step #1

Heat the whipped soap base in a small bowl or microwave safe container in 20 second bursts, stirring between each interval, until completely melted.

Step #2

Cut the melt and pour soap base into 1 inch cubes.  Divide evenly between the 3 measuring cups.  Melt each one in the microwave in 30 second bursts, stirring between each interval.  Once melted, divide the whipped soap base evenly between the three cups.

Add 5 drops of fragrance oil or 2 drops of essential oil to each cup of melted soap.  Add 1/2 teaspoon of mica to each cup of soap and stir well.

Step #3

Fill each cavity of soap 1/3 full.  You can use the same color to fill all four cavities or alternate colors like I did.  Spray the top with rubbing alcohol and let sit until hardened.

Step #4

Once the bottom later is hard, spray the top of the soap with rubbing alcohol and spray the bottom of the unicorn rubber ducks with alcohol.  Place the duck in the middle of each cavity.  Then add another layer of soap in a different color, filling the cavity 1/3 full.  Spray with rubbing alcohol on top and let sit until hardened.

Step #5

Once the middle layer is hardened, spray each cavity with rubbing alcohol.  Then fill the cavity with the remaining color.  You can put in the microwave to remelt if needed.  Spray the top with rubbing alcohol and let harden for an hour.

This makes 4 4-ounce bars of soap.

I hope your kids love this unicorn rubber duck soap!
