Learn how to make an easy magnesium lotion to ease sore muscles or promote sleep. Unlike a magnesium spray, this DIY lotion goes on smooth without feeling greasy.
How to Make Easy Magnesium Lotion
If you’ve ever experienced tired muscles, stress, or trouble sleeping, this DIY magnesium lotion might be just what your body needs. Magnesium is an essential mineral that helps promote relaxation, ease muscle tension, and support better sleep — but many of us don’t get enough of it.
Applying magnesium topically is an easy, effective way to boost your magnesium levels naturally, and making your own lotion means you know exactly what’s in it and saves you money.
Why Use a Magnesium Lotion?
Unlike magnesium oil, which can feel tingly or sticky on the skin, a magnesium body lotion combines the benefits of magnesium with skin-nourishing ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax.
The result is a creamy, moisturizing lotion that absorbs beautifully while helping your muscles relax.
I use both a magnesium spray and a magnesium lotion, but not at the same time. The spray is easy to make, but it feels oily on my skin.
When I have the time, I make the cream and use that before bed. I prefer the cream in the winter because it helps moisturize my skin too.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- ½ cup magnesium flakes
- 3 tbsp distilled water
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- 3 tbsp shea butter
- 2 tbsp beeswax
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
Directions
Step #1
Boil the water and add the magnesium flakes. Stir until completely dissolved. Set aside to cool slightly.
Step #2
In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax. Heat in 30-second intervals until melted, stirring between each.
Step #3
Pour the melted oils and the magnesium mixture into a mixing bowl or stand mixer.
Step #4
Beat on high for 5 minutes. Let it rest for 10 minutes, then beat again for 1 minute to create a light, whipped texture.
Step #5
Add your essential oils and beat to combine.
Store your homemade magnesium lotion in an airtight container.
Shelf Life and Preservatives
Because this recipe contains water, it can grow bacteria or mold over time. If you plan to sell or gift your magnesium lotion, it’s very important to add a broad-spectrum preservative such as Optiphen or Germaben II to ensure safety and longevity.
Follow the manufacturer's directions for usage because each preservative has different usage rates.
If you’re keeping it for personal use and skip the preservative, store your lotion in a clean, airtight container in a cool, dry place. Use it within 1 week or keep it refrigerated to extend the shelf life slightly.
If it smells off or discolors, discard it immediately.
Best Essential Oils for Sleep and Sore Muscles
This recipe includes lavender and eucalyptus essential oils, which are both excellent choices — but you can customize the scent based on your needs.
- For sleep and relaxation: Lavender, chamomile, cedarwood, or bergamot. Or try this Sleepy essential oil blend.
- For sore muscles and tension: Eucalyptus, peppermint, rosemary, or black pepper essential oil. Or try this Relief essential oil blend.
These essential oils not only add a soothing aroma but also enhance the benefits of magnesium by promoting calm and easing tight muscles.
How to Use Magnesium Lotion
Massage a small amount into your legs, shoulders, or feet before bed for a restful night’s sleep, or after a workout to help relieve sore muscles. A little goes a long way — start with a dime-sized amount and increase as needed.
