How to Make Hand Sanitizer At Home Easy Recipe With Essential Oils

How to make hand sanitizer at home easy recipe.  This DIY hand sanitizer gel is a simple recipe that uses aloe vera, alcohol, and essential oils.

I might be a bit of a germophobe.  When Caleb was a baby, I swear he got an ear infection every single time we went to the store.  He was hospitalized with RSV when he was four weeks old and again at just over a year old.

I still sanitize the entire cart before I touch it.  I have sanitizer hanging from my purse and one in the car.

Lately, everyone is freaking out about the Coronavirus.  The Coronavirus isn't new; look at a can of Lysol spray at the store and you'll probably find that it kills Coronavirus.

Most strains cause mild to moderate symptoms similar to a cold.  This is a new strain with more severe symptoms.

Although I'm personally not worried about the Coronavirus at home, I still don't want to get sick with any virus.  So far, I've managed to avoid even sniffles from a cold this year.

I am taking steps to boost my immune system, namely taking elderberry syrup, and using this immunity boosting hand sanitizer.

Can You Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer?

Yes!  Learning how to make hand sanitizer at home easy recipe is so simple!  You only need two ingredients plus essential oils.

How Do You Make Scented Hand Sanitizer?

You can either make a hand sanitizer recipe like this one or buy a base.  I used to buy a gallon of base and scent that, but unless you're selling it, you won't use it before it expires.

I use essential oils for their benefits and for the scent.  You can also use a fragrance oil in this recipe or in a base.

What Are The Ingredients of Hand Sanitizer?

Hand sanitizers have an alcohol in them.  I use isopropyl alcohol for my DIY hand sanitizer gel, but commercial ones might use ethyl alcohol.  They also might have water, glycerin, and a fragrance.

The CDC recommends that any hand sanitizer have 60 percent alcohol.

How Do You Make Natural Hand Sanitizer Without Alcohol?

The alcohol is what kills the germs.  Without it, this isn't a hand sanitizer.

Is It Better To Use Hand Sanitizer or Soap?

Use soap and water where you can.  Use hand sanitizer when soap and water isn't available.  There is some speculation that sanitizer won't work on dirty or greasy hands, so keep that in mind.

Hand sanitizer doesn't kill all types of germs.  There are germs that hand washing will kill but sanitizer does not (source).

Aloe Vera Gel

The base of this DIY hand santizer gel is aloe vera gel.  It provides a gel base with a great consistency for the sanitizer.

That's not the only reason I use aloe vera gel.  Using alcohol based sanitizers too often can dry out your skin.  If your skin gets too dry, it can crack and bleed.  This can lead to germs entering the body and causing an infection.

Aloe vera is a natural moisturizer.  It helps the skin retain moisture, which can prevent or treat dry skin.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol, also called rubbing alcohol, is what kills germs.  It's recommended that you use 60 percent alcohol in a DIY hand sanitizer gel.

You probably use 91 percent isopropyl alcohol if you make soap, but you actually want a 70 percent for this recipe.  A higher percent doesn't necessarily mean it kills more germs.

Isopropyl alcohol needs water to kill germs.  Water works like a catalyst and helps denature the proteins in the cell membranes.  Therefore a 70 percent alcohol actually works better than a 91 percent.  (source)

Lemon Essential Oil

I used lemon essential oil for a few reasons.  It smells light and fresh.  I'm not a big fan of tea tree oil, but this balances it well.

Lemon essential oil is a natural astringent.  It's been proven to kill some types of bacteria as well as be an antioxidant for use as a natural preservative.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense essential oil is one of my favorite essential oils for skin.  It helps strengthen the skin and improve tone and elasticity.

According to one study, frankincense isn't the best essential oil to kill bacteria, but it does kill some bacteria.  It's skin benefits are still great, so it makes a good complement to the other oils.

Tea Tree Oil Essential Oil

Tea tree oil is probably the most known essential oil to kill germs.  It's been proven to kill bacteria and is known as an antimicrobial essential oil.
