How to Make a Watermelon Bath Bomb

Learn how to make a DIY watermelon bath bomb at home. These cute bath bombs are scented with a natural fragrance oil, or you can also use an essential oil blend or fragrance oil.  These summer bath bombs with cream of tartar are easy to make with a cute layered look and dry rock hard, making them perfect for gift giving.

DIY Watermelon Bath Bomb Recipe

My daughter loves watermelons.  I have to pick one up every time I go to the store!

She wanted to make some summer bath bombs, so we decided to make a melon bath bomb.

There isn't a watermelon essential oil, but I still found a way to make a natural watermelon bath bomb recipe.  I have some more options for you to use below.

Why Do You Use Cream of Tartar in Bath Bombs?

I like to make bath bombs with cream of tartar because they are harder and fizz better than recipes without it.  I don't always use cream of tartar, but my daughter likes a lot of fizz, so I used it to make these fruit bath bombs.

Bath bombs with cream of tartar are harder, so they hold their shape better and are less likely to fall apart after molding.  Cream of tartar also helps create a smooth texture because the powder is so fine.

Cream of tartar is mildly acidic.  It reacts with the citric acid for more bubbles for your cute bath bombs.  It also helps prevent the essential oils or fragrance oils from evaporating.

How Much Cream of Tartar Do You Add to Bath Bombs?

If cream of tartar is so good for bath bombs, why not use a lot of it and not use Epsom salts or clay as a filler?

Cream of tartar is more expensive than salt or clay.  Also, too much cream of tartar can make your bath bombs crumbly because it's so fine.

Aim for 3 to 5 percent of the total weight to get the benefits of it without using too much and risking crumbly bath bombs.

Can I Use Cream of Tartar Instead of Citric Acid in Bath Bombs?

You can replace citric acid with cream of tartar to make bath bombs with cream of tartar.  However, this DIY watermelon bath bomb is formulated to use both.

If you replace the citric acid with cream of tartar, there will be too much and your melon bath bomb will be crumbly.

How Do You Make the Hardest Bath Bombs?

Hard bath bombs have a longer shelf life, are less likely to get damaged in storage, and last longer in the bathtub.

Here are some ways to make your fruit bath bombs harder:

  • Use cream of tartar or kaolin clay to make your summer bath bombs.
  • Limit wet ingredients and use wet ingredients that evaporate.  This is why I like to spray my bath bomb mixture with rubbing alcohol or witch hazel instead of water.
  • Store your cute bath bombs in an airtight container. Avoid storing them in the bathroom or other areas with high humidity.

If your bath bombs are crumbly, don't throw them away!  Turn them into a fizzy bath powder like this moisturizing unicorn bath powder recipe.

Why Do You Need Epsom Salt in Bath Bombs?

I like to make bath bombs with Epsom salt because the salt has magnesium that can be absorbed through the skin.

Epsom salts are also said to be anti-inflammatory and can help detox the body.

Can You Use Fresh Fruit to Make Bath Bombs?

Unfortunately, there's no real fruit in these fruit bath bombs.  Real watermelon would get moldy and rot during storage.

Can You Put Dried Fruit in Bath Bombs?

I don't recommend adding dried fruits to your bath bombs because dried fruits absorb moisture from the air.

However, you can use freeze dried fruit powder as a natural colorant.  It will absorb moisture from the air, so be sure to store the fruit bath bombs in an airtight container in a dry location.  You can buy watermelon powder to use for a natural pink color.

Can You Use Food Extracts in Bath Bombs?

Yes, you can use food extracts to make a watermelon bath bomb recipe.  However, it's important to use a flavoring that isn't water based because it can activate the citric acid and cause a soft bath bomb.

Try this watermelon flavor to use for a fragrance.

How to Scent a DIY Watermelon Bath Bombs

There are a few different ways you can scent your melon bath bomb:

  • Use a watermelon fragrance oil.  This will give you a true watermelon scent, but it might not be natural.
  • Natural fragrance oils are made with natural ingredients.  They aren't essential oils, and they are available in a wider variety of scents.  Try Watermelon or Wild Watermelon from Nature's Oil.
  • Use watermelon flavor that's meant for candy.  Make sure it's glycerin or alcohol based though.
  • There really isn't a watermelon essential oil blend.  However, there's a popular blend called Watermelon Crawl that is 2 drops of citronella, 2 drops sweet orange, and 2 drops lime.

You can also try one of these fun essential oil blends that smell like candy if you like the multi colored bath bombs with watermelon colors but aren't picky about having an actual watermelon scent.
