How to Make Lemon Bath Bombs

Learn how to make lemon bath bombs.  These citrus bath bombs have lemon essential oil for its benefits for your skin and Epsom salts for tired and aching muscles.  I also added kaolin clay so these DIY lemon bath bombs get rock hard and won't fall apart after you make them.

DIY Lemon Bath Bombs

Lemon is an uplifting and clarifying scent.  I like to clean with lemon scented products, so it always makes me think of being clean and refreshed.

I wanted some summer bath products, so I mad a lemon bath bomb recipe.  This is a fairly basic bath bomb recipe, but I used two colors so they are cute.

Keep them for yourself or give as a gift.  These make great gifts for friends, and they are easier to make than you think.

How to Make Citrus Bath Bombs

Citrus scents are popular for bath bombs because they smell so good!  I make DIY lemon bath bombs, but you can also use lime essential oil, sweet orange essential oil, mandarin essential oil, or grapefruit essential oil for citrus bath bombs.

One thing to note is that some citrus essential oils can cause a phototoxic reaction.  This means that certain chemicals in the oils can react with UV light from the sun and damage your skin.

After sun exposure, you can get first- to third-degree burns, which can lead to skin discoloration.

Cold pressed citrus oils are the ones that have phototoxic properties.  The lemon essential oil that I used is cold pressed, so use with caution.

I recommend rinsing off after taking a bath with a lemon bath bomb.  Avoid sun exposure for 24 hours after using, and always use sunblock.

What Does Citric Acid Do in Bath Bombs?

Citric acid is in all bath bombs.  When citric acid and baking soda get wet, they form a chemical reaction that releases carbon dioxide.  This is what causes the fun fizzing and bubbles!

Will Bath Bombs Fizz Without Citric Acid?

No, your lemon bath bomb recipe won't fizz without citric acid.  It will hold its shape (if you add extra dry ingredients), but it won't fizz.

Is Citric Acid Safe on Skin?

Yes, citric acid is safe on your skin.  Don't let the word acid scare you.  It's a mild acid, and it won't harm your skin.

It's also a very small amount when the lemon bath bomb recipe is used in a tub of water.

Can You Use Lemon in Bath Bombs?

Yes, you can make DIY lemon bath bombs.  Lemon essential oil is phototoxic, so wear sunscreen if you'll be in the sun in the 24 hours following your bath.

Can You Put Lemon Zest in Bath Bombs?

Yes, you can add 2 to 4 tablespoons of dried lemon zest to your lemon bath bomb recipe.  This will give you more lemon bath bomb benefits and give them a pretty texture.

Citur Essential Oil Blends

I just used lemon essential oil for my DIY lemon bath bombs.  However, you can also use lemon to make a blend.

Here are some good blends to try for citrus bath bombs:

I make these lemon essential oil blends in a small 5 ml amber bottle and then add to my citrus bath bombs.

You can also use my essential oil blending factor worksheets to create your own custom blends.

You can also use a premade citrus blend.  I like Simply Earth Citrus Burst, Plant Therapy Citrus Burst, or Revive Citrus Delight.
