How to make a healthy apple crisp macchiato recipe.  This is a Starbucks apple crisp macchiato copycat recipe to make at home.  You can make it sugar free or vegan, and it saves you a lot of money!





Skinny Apple Crisp Macchiato Recipe


I've been known to enjoy a pumpkin spice latte or two during pumpkin spice season.  When Starbucks announced the new apple crisp macchiato, I had to try one.


I love apples and apple crisp, but I wasn't sure how it would be in a coffee drink.  However, I was pleasantly surprised that it's a delicious fall drink!


My Starbucks is half an hour away, so I knew I had to come up with a skinny apple crisp macchiato recipe.  


I did some testing and came up with an apple crisp macchiato copycat recipe for both the hot drink and the iced drink.  





What is in an Apple Crisp Macchiato?


According to the Starbucks website, an apple crisp macchiato has:


  • Milk
  • Brewed espresso
  • Apple brown sugar syrup
  • Spiced apple drizzle


These ingredients seem innocent, but the syrup and drizzle both have preservatives and natural flavors.  Natural flavors could be real apple, or it could be bug wings.  We just don't know.


Is the Apple Crisp Starbucks Vegan?


Unlike the pumpkin spice latte, the apple crisp macchiato is vegan if you use a plant based milk.  My skinny apple crisp macchiato copycat recipe is vegan with either almond milk or oat milk.


Is the Apple Crisp Macchiato Any Good?


Yes, it really is.  It's crisp with a strong apple flavor.  Both the hot and the iced apple macchiatos are very good, but I think I prefer the hot one because the flavor is stronger.





Should You Stir a Macchiato?


Generally, no you don't stir an apple crisp macchiato copycat recipe.  But life is short.  If you want to stir it, then stir it.  


Is Macchiato Hot or Cold?


You can make a vegan apple crisp macchiato either hot or cold.  Both are delicious!


Healthy Apple Crisp Macchiato Recipe Variations and Tips


This skinny Starbucks apple crisp macchiato copycat recipe is fairy easy to make, but here are some variations:


  • The real thing calls for espresso for the hot drink, but you can use your favorite coffee when you make a sugar free apple crisp macchiato.  
  • I like cold brew in my skinny iced apple crisp macchiato.  You can brew extra coffee and cool it to use, but cold brew isn't as bitter.  Learn how to make cold brew coffee or make Instant Pot coffee concentrate.
  • You can make an apple syrup canning recipe to use or make the syrup below.  The canning recipe is not sugar free.  The recipe below makes a smaller batch, and you can make it sugar free.  Store it in the fridge or freeze in silicone ice cube trays to use later.
  • Top with whipped cream and add apple pie spice or cinnamon on top.  You can also drizzle homemade caramel sauce on top, but it may not be sugar free or vegan.
  • Starbucks uses brown sugar in their apple syrup.  You can use your favorite sugar substitute to make your apple syrup for a sugar free apple crisp macchiato.  You can also use Splenda brown sugar, but it's blended and not sugar free.  Sverve brown is a great sugar free alternative.
  • I like to use oat milk for a vegan apple crisp macchiato recipe.  However, you can use your favorite milk product.

  


Apple Crisp Macchiato Copycat Recipe Ingredients


First, you'll make an apple syrup.  Then you'll use that to make a healthy apple crisp macchiato recipe. 


Apple Syrup Ingredients


You will need the following to make an apple syrup that can be stored in the fridge.  Alternately, you can make an apple cider jelly for canning and use that.


  • Apple cider or apple juice
  • Brown sugar, monk fruit, stevia, or other sweetener
  • Cinnamon sticks


Apple Macchiato Ingredients


You will need the following to make a healthy apple crisp macchiato recipe:


  • Warmed milk.  You can use half and half, whole milk, oat milk, or almond milk
  • Strong brewed coffee
  • Apple syrup
  • Honey or sweetener to taste

   


How to Make a Hot Apple Crisp Macchiato


Step #1


To make the apple syrup, place apple juice or apple cider, sweetener, and cinnamon sticks in a small pan.  Simmer for 5 minutes.  Remove the cinnamon sticks.  Store in the fridge until ready to use.


Step #2


Warm the milk of your choice in a medium sized pan.  Add 1 tablespoon apple syrup.





Step #3


Pour the warm milk into two cups.  Add brewed coffee over the warmed milk.  


Step #4


Top with whipped cream and apple spice or cinnamon if desired.  You can also drizzle a caramel sauce on top, but this may not be vegan or sugar free.


How to Make Starbucks Iced Apple Crisp Macchiato Recipe


Step #1


To make the apple syrup, place apple juice or apple cider, sweetener, and cinnamon sticks in a small pan.  Simmer for 5 minutes.  Remove the cinnamon sticks.  Store in the fridge until ready to use.  Let cool before making a healthy iced apple crisp macchiato recipe.


Step #2


Fill a glass with ice.  Fill half full with milk of your choice.  Then add 1 tablespoon apple syrup and top with cold brew.
