Skinny Mocha Frappe Recipe Sugar Free Vegan Dairy Free Options

How to make a delicious skinny mocha frappe recipe.  This iced coffee drink is sugar free and can be made vegan and dairy free.

My daughter spent most of the summer at the theater.  Thankfully, we have a wonderful community theater that's only 10 minutes away.  That's pretty amazing considering that I live in the middle of nowhere.

Sometime I drop her off at the theater and enjoy a few hours alone outside of the house.  It's a small town, so there aren't many options.

When I say small, I mean small.  There are two dollar stores, two thrift stores, and that's about it for shopping after 5 p.m.

There are a few restaurants, and there's a McDonald's near the theater.  I may have developed a slight weakness for their mocha frappes during my alone time.

I needed to kill some time, it was hot, and they are so good.  It was like coffee house taste for two dollars and some change.

They taste amazing, but they are definitely a sometimes drink.  I wanted more than one this summer, so I made my own skinny mocha frappe recipe.

I like this recipe because it's easy to make.  It has no refined sugar, so I feel a little less guilty.  You can also make it vegan or dairy free.

Like most of my recipes, you have options when you make this.  Want a dairy free mocha frappe recipe?  Use almond milk.

SKINNY MOCHA FRAPPE RECIPE

I knew I didn't want to know the nutrition information for the McDonald's mocha frappe.  Ignorance is bliss, right?

I peeked anyway.

Their website has the following listed for a small mocha frappe:

  • 420 calories
  • 60 grams carbs
  • 11 grams saturated fat
  • 120 mg sodium
  • 54 grams sugars

Then I peeked at the ingredients.  They only use four ingredients: mocha coffee frappe base, ice, whipped light cream, and chocolate drizzle.

The mocha coffee frappe base is probably the scariest.  It has sugar, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, mono and diglycerides, carrageenan, and artificial dyes.

It doesn't even have coffee in it.  It's a coffee extract, whatever that is.

Even the whipped cream has carrageenan, and it also has liquid sugar in it.

The chocolate on top is almost as bad as the mocha coffee frappe base.  It has corn syrup, dextrose, sugar, and modified food starch.  Among other things.  I didn't list the not so scary things.

Carrageenan is generally recognized as safe, but it can cause cause inflammation.  I'm trying to reduce inflammation daily, so I'd rather not have it.

Like most of my recipes, I'm going to give you options.  The ingredients, calories, and sugars will depend on the ingredients that you use.

You can use regular chocolate syrup.  I promise that I won't judge you.  Just be aware that that can increase calories and probably has high fructose corn syrup and sugar.

If you want this to be truly sugar free, use cocoa powder and skip the chocolate syrup drizzle.

I will say that this skinny mocha frappe recipe does taste better with chocolate syrup.   It's up to you to make it how you want to.

To compare, this skinny mocha frappe recipe has:

  • 70 calories
  • 21 grams carbs
  • 0.1 gram saturated fat
  • 12 mg sodium
  • 1 gram sugar

Changing the milk or the chocolate choice can add calories and sugar, so be sure to recalculate if you are counting carbs or calories.  I calculated the nutrition for this skinny mocha frappe recipe for the first listed ingredients in the recipe below.

More skinny coffee drinks:

COFFEE

Unlike my drive through drink, this skinny mocha frappe recipe really does have coffee in it.  I brew extra in the morning and stick it in the fridge.

You can also use instant coffee to make it.

Use decaf coffee if you don't want the extra caffeine.  I think decaf tastes off, but I can drink it in this recipe.

If you're really organized, you can even freeze the coffee as ice cubes to make this skinny mocha frappe recipe.  You can freeze several of them and get them out as needed.

If you do this, I'd use two cups of frozen coffee cubes.

I recommend this silicone ice cube tray.  It's just so much easier to get the cubes out versus a plastic tray.

MILK CHOICE

Your milk choice will affect your calories and fat content.  I usually use vanilla almond milk.  You can also use coconut milk or even cow's milk.

Use whole milk if you're watching your carbs and a lower fat milk if you are limiting fat.  I think whole milk gives this a richer flavor, but it's definitely yummy with almond milk.

CHOCOLATE

To make this a sugar free skinny mocha frappe recipe, use unsweetened cocoa powder.  You can also add chocolate syrup.

I buy chocolate syrup that has real sugar and no high fructose corn syrup or preservatives.  I don't have it very often, so I'm willing to make that trade off.

If you use powdered cocoa, you might need to add a little extra sweetener.

SWEETENER

I prefer coconut sugar in my skinny drinks.  It's my preferred sugar substitute because it doesn't leave a bitter aftertaste and it tastes the most like sugar.

You can also use liquid stevia or even sugar.  It's up to you and your preferences and needs.

VANILLA EXTRACT

The vanilla helps bring out the chocolate flavor.  It's optional.

If you do use it, use a real vanilla extract.
