Before we get to the coconut oil and essential oil hair mask, I want to talk about each ingredient.  Even though this peppermint oil hair mask is easy to make, I selected each ingredient carefully.

Coconut oil tends to be heavy on your hair, but I have some tricks and tips to help you reap the benefits of a coconut oil for hair mask DIY without leaving your hair looking oily.

Which Oil is Best for Hair Growth?

There are several carrier oils for hair that you can use, and each one has its own benefits when you use them in a mint hair mask.

Coconut oil is a solid at room temperature.  Coconut oil is unique in that it can penetrate the shaft of the hair and doesn’t just rest on top.

This means that the molecules get into the hair shaft and temporarily seal small holes.  These small holes are what leads to frizzy hair and dull hair.

Using a coconut oil hair mask helps seal your hair.  This is temporary, but for several days after using this coconut oil for hair mask DIY, your hair will be smoother and split ends are smoothed so they aren’t as noticeable.

Other great oils for your hair are:

You can find benefits of carrier oils for hair and skin on this carrier oils benefits printable chart.  You can use these oils to make a homemade hair oil too.

Can You Use Coconut Oil as a Hair Mask?

Yes, coconut oil hair mask is a great one to try at home.  However, I add more ingredients to make a coconut oil honey hair mask for more benefits.

Is Coconut Oil Good for Dry Hair?

Yes, a coconut oil for hair mask DIY is great for dry hair.  As I mentioned above, coconut oil can actually penetrate the hair shaft to fill in small holes caused by damage.

This is temporary, but it will make your hair look and feel better for a few days.

How Long Should I Leave Coconut Oil in my Hair?

You should leave this coconut oil and peppermint oil for hair mask on your hair for at least 30 minutes.  However, you can leave it on overnight if you want to.

I aim for about an hour or two before I wash out the peppermint oil hair mask.  Heat will help this coconut oil and honey hair mask work better, so I recommend using a heat cap.

Do You Put Coconut Oil on Wet or Dry Hair?

You should put a coconut oil and honey hair mask on dry hair.  Oil and water don’t mix, so if you put it on wet hair, it will sit on top of the water and not work as well.

How Often Should I Do Coconut Oil Hair Mask?

I use a coconut oil honey hair mask once a week, but you can use it 2 or 3 times a week.  Generally, you should make a peppermint oil hair mask when your hair starts to feel dry.

How Do You Remove Coconut Oil From Hair?

I love using a coconut oil hair mask recipe to make my hair look amazing, but coconut oil is a heavy oil for your hair.

I rinse my hair and wash and condition as usual to remove the coconut oil for hair mask DIY.  If you still find that your hair is oily, you can use a dry shampoo or some arrowroot powder for hair to absorb excess oil.

Can You Add Essential Oils to Coconut Oil for Hair?

Yes, you can make a coconut oil and essential oil hair mask.  This is a mint hair mask with peppermint essential oil.

Peppermint essential oil has menthol, which can tingle the scalp.  It also boosts circulation to your scalp and can encourage hair growth.

For this reason, I suggest that you massage this peppermint oil hair mask into your scalp.

You can also use one of the following to make a coconut oil and essential oil hair mask:

How Do You Apply Peppermint Oil to Your Hair?

Essential oils must be diluted before you apply them to your hair or scalp.  For a peppermint oil hair mask, you should use a 1 or 2 percent dilution.

This means for each ounce of coconut oil hair mask recipe or other carrier oil, use 6 to 12 drops of peppermint essential oil.

If you make a lot of DIY beauty recipes, I recommend using a printable essential oil dilution chart.  There is also a dilution chart in this essential oil printable journal.
