How to Make Body Milk Lotion

Learn how to make a body milk lotion.  This is a lightweight and non greasy lotion that you can make at home.  It's great for dry skin, and I like to use it during the day since it soaks in quickly.

How to Make Body Milk Cream

This body milk recipe is one of the recipes in my January Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box.  This is one of the reasons that I love the monthly box so much because I get some amazing recipes!

I've made 100s of soaps, lotions, scrubs, and more.  It's not often that I find a new recipe to make at home, but this body milk recipe is one that I've never made before.

I normally buy a lotion concentrate because lotion is kind of a pain to make, but this is an easy lotion recipe to make at home.

Not only do you get the supplies, but you also get information monthly about the oils that month.  It's a great way to learn about essential oils a little at a time so you're not overwhelmed.

What Are the Benefits of Body Milk?

Body milk is thinner than body lotion, so it soaks into the skin quickly.  It has an oil and a water phase like lotion, but it's still an easy lotion recipe to make at home.

It's great for dry skin, and I like to use it during the day because it doesn't leave my hands greasy or oily after using it.

Is Body Milk the Same as Lotion?

When considering body milk vs body lotion, this body milk recipe is easier to make because it uses emulsifying wax as the emulsifier and doesn't need a co-emulsifier like stearic acid or cetyl alcohol.

Emulsifiers bind oil and water together.  Sometimes you'll need a co-emulsifier used to stabilize an emulsion.

Emulsifying wax is a versatile emulsifier.  I used it in my bath melt recipe with emulsifier and my gingerbread emulsified sugar scrub recipe.

Is Body Milk Good for Dry Skin?

Yes, this DIY body milk is good for dry skin.  It has glycerin to lock moisture into your skin.  Glycerin is a humectant, so it pulls moisture from the air to your skin.

It also has almond oil to nourish your skin.  Almond oil is high in vitamins A and E and has fatty acids to moisturize your skin.

You can swap out the almond oil if you would like.  I recommend using sunflower oil or grapeseed oil for dry oils that soak into the skin quickly.

What is the Difference Between Body Butter and Body Milk?

Body milk vs body butter: what's the difference?  Body butter is a thick product that's made with natural skin butters like shea butter or cocoa butter and a carrier oil.  It doesn't need a preservative since there's no water in the recipe.

This body milk recipe, however, does have a water phase.  It needs a preservative to be shelf stable.  It's also much thinner than body butter.

Body Milk Lotion Preservative

Since this body milk recipe has water in it, it has a short shelf life of about 6 weeks per Simply Earth.  I would also recommend storing it in the fridge to prevent nasties from growing.

You can use a preservative for a shelf life of about 9 months.  I like Geogard ECT because it protects against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mold, and yeast in water based products.

You can also use Phenonip or Germaben as a preservative.  You will need to adjust the percent used based on the total weight of the recipe and the usage rate for those preservatives.

DIY Body Milk Ingredients

You will need the following to learn how to make body milk cream:

How to Make Body Milk Cream

Step #1

Combine the water and glycerin in a small bowl.  In a separate bowl, combine the almond oil and emulsifying wax.

Step #2

Heat both mixtures in a double boiler or in the microwave in short bursts until they are 150 degrees F.  Remove from heat.  It's important that the mixtures are close in temperature or they will not mix.  This was tricky for me.  The water heated up much quicker than the oil.

Step #3

Use a hand mixer and slowly add the oil mixture to the water mixture.  Mix until combined, about 2-5 minutes.

Step #4

Stir in the essential oils and Geogard ECT and mix for 30 seconds.

Step #5

Allow the body milk lotion to cool and then place in a 4 ounce container.

Tips for Making Body Milk Lotion

This is a basic recipe, but it's still a little tricky to make.  Here are some tips to help you make it:

  • I microwaved my bowls at the same time.  The wax and oil mixture took longer to melt.
  • You need a thermometer to check the temperatures.  As much as I love my infrared thermometer, it's not the best because it will read the temperature of the bowl and not the water or oil mixtures.
  • It's tricky to get the two bowls the same temperature.  I ended up putting the oil mixture into the microwave for about 15 seconds and then adding the water mixture for the final 15 seconds.  This helped me get them very close to 15 seconds.
  • It's important to mix for up to 5 minutes.  It will look like it's done, but if you undermix, it will separate.
  • Use a hand mixer for best results.
  • Add the essential oils and preservative when the mixture cools.  If you add them when the mixture is too hot, the oils can burn off and the preservative might be damaged.

How to Use Body Milk

So what is body milk used for?  You can use it like a lotion to relieve dry skin.  You can also add this body milk recipe to a bath to moisturize your entire body.

I really like it as a hand cream because it soaks in quickly.
