How to Make Creamy Body Butter With Shea Butter, Coconut Oil

Learn how to make body butter with shea butter.  This easy body butter recipe isn't whipped, so it's the perfect recipe for beginners.  I used an essential oil blend called Beauty Within to promote better skin.  This is a non whipped body butter recipe, so it's easy to make and works very well to moisturize and nourish your skin.

How to Make Creamy Body Butter Recipe

The weather is getting cooler, so my skin needs some extra love.  I like to use a lotion each night before bed.

I have made lotions, but I prefer to make an easy body butter recipe.  Body butters are made with butters and oils, so you don't need a preservative.

You pretty much just melt, mix, and pour.  You can whip them if you want, but this is a non whipped body butter recipe.

This body butter recipe with shea butter and coconut oil is oily, but it's really good for dry skin.  The shea butter and coconut oil are moisturizing and have fatty acids to keep your skin feeling smooth.

How Do You Make Body Butter Stay Creamy?

When you learn how to make DIY body butter, it might get oily instead of creamy.  This is often due to having too much oil.

For this creamy body butter recipe, I used 2 parts shea butter to 1 part liquid oil (sunflower oil) and 1 part coconut oil.  This gives a firmer non whipped body butter recipe.

Is Body Butter Supposed to be Greasy?

This body butter recipe with shea butter and coconut oil also has sunflower oil that's a liquid oil.  Sunflower oil is a dry oil, so it soaks into the skin quickly.

Shea butter shouldn't make your skin greasy.  However, coconut oil is a greasy oil.  It has great skin benefits and it's only used a 1/4 of this creamy body butter recipe, so overall it isn't too greasy.

How Do You Make Shea Body Butter Less Greasy?

Shea butter isn't greasy and shouldn't make your skin feeling oily.  You can make a body butter recipe with shea butter less greasy by using a dry oil.

I used sunflower oil, but you can also one of these dry oils:

You can learn more about different carrier oils in my list of carrier oils and their benefits post.  I have several of them listed in the free printable that you get for joining my newsletter or you can buy the carrier oils printable if you'd rather not sign up.

You can also add 1/2 tablespoon arrowroot powder to your creamy body butter recipe.  This will help absorb the excess oil and your homemade body butter with shea butter and coconut oil less greasy.

Do You Have to Melt Shea Butter to Make Body Butter?

Yes, you should melt your shea butter before making a body butter recipe with shea butter.  That's the best way to make sure that the shea butter, sunflower oil, and coconut oil are thoroughly mixed.

If your shea butter is very soft, then you might be able to skip heating it.  The warm coconut oil may be enough heat to melt the shea butter enough to make a body butter recipe with shea butter.

However, if it doesn't melt, then you can heat the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler.

Does Melting Shea Butter Damage It?

No, melting shea butter to make an easy body butter recipe won't ruin it.  It is, however, important not to overheat it.

Why is Shea Butter Grainy?

It shea butter gets too hot and cools too quickly, it can get grainy.  This doesn't mean that it's bad nor does it affect your creamy body butter recipe other than make it not feel so great on your skin because of the grainy texture.

How Do I Stop Shea Butter Going Grainy?

The best way to prevent shea butter from getting grainy when you learn how to make DIY body butter is to heat it slowly and just until it melts.

What is the Best Way to Melt Shea Butter?

I recommend melting your shea butter for this non whipped body butter recipe in a double boiler.  You can also put hot water in a pan and place a bowl or cup of shea butter in the hot water and let it sit until it's soft.

Do not heat your shea butter in the microwave or over direct heat on the stove.  This can overheat it, which can make it get grainy as it cools.

How Do You Keep Body Butter From Hardening?

Your homemade body butter with shea butter and coconut oil can get hard if it's stored in a cool location.  My bedroom is colder than the rest of the house, so my creamy body butter recipe gets hard in the winter if I leave it in there.

It's fine to use, and it should be soft enough to scoop out with your fingers.  If not, just set it in a warmer location for a few hours.

Do Body Butters Need Preservatives?

When you learn how to make body butter when shea butter, you might be surprised that it doesn't need a preservative.  This is why I prefer to make a creamy body butter recipe over making lotion.

Since you only use oil based products and don't add any water, your easy body butter recipe does not need a preservative.

How Long Can Homemade Body Butter Last?

If you use clean hands to scoop out your non whipped body butter recipe and store it away from sunlight, it should last about 6 months.

If any water gets introduced into your body butter recipe with shea butter, then you will need to toss it.

Essential Oils for Creamy Body Butter Recipe

I used the Beauty Within essential oil blend from Simply Earth.  It's a blend of Myrrh, Frankincense, Rosemary, and Lavender.

Their Bumps and Boos Boos blend is also really good for skin since it has Helichrysum, Lavender, Tea Tree, and Lemon.  One thing to note is that lemon can increase photosensitivity, so don't be in the sun after using it.

Other good essential oils to try are:

If you want to make your own blends, you can use my blending worksheets to create them for your recipes.

No matter which essential oil you use, you'll want to use 36 to 48 drops.  Grab my essential oil dilution chart to make it easy to know how much to add to your recipes.
