DIY Foot Scrub for Dead Skin

Get your feet ready for summer with a homemade foot scrub to remove dead skin.  This sugar scrub for feet is easy to make, and it has a blend of oils to moisturize dry skin and a blend of essential oils that smells perfect for summer.

Foot Scrub for Dry Feet

Raise your hand if your feet need some love after the winter!

I know mine do.

I have been moisturizing my feet, but I made a DIY foot scrub for dead skin to help get dead skin off of my feet so the moisturizer can actually reach the skin.

This sugar foot scrub recipe was in my Simply Earth recipe box for June 2022, and it was perfect timing.

It's really easy to make, and I love the blend of carrier oils they used.  It also smells wonderful with the essential oils they recommended.

I also recommend printing this recipe to create an essential oil binder.

Are Sugar Scrubs Good for Your Feet?

Yes, a sugar foot scrub recipe is good for your feet.  The sugar works to naturally exfoliate dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.  The carrier oils in this DIY foot scrub sugar help moisturize your skin for softer feet.

If you try to use lotion on thick dead skin, the lotion can't reach your skin to moisturize it.  By removing the dead skin cells first with a homemade sugar foot scrub, the lotion can better reach your skin.

What's Better Salt or Sugar Scrub?

It's personal preference if you use salt or sugar for a foot scrub for dry feet.  Salt is more abrasive, so it works better on thicker calluses.  However, salt can be too irritating.

You can substitute Epsom salt or sea salt for the sugar in this recipe if you want.

Learn more about salt scrub vs sugar scrub for the differences between the two.

How Do You Exfoliate Dry Feet?

Exfoliating removes the top layer of dead skin cells so your lotion can penetrate the skin.  I usually use a homemade sugar foot scrub recipe, but you can also use a chemical peel on your feet.

A chemical peel using mild acids to break the bonds that hold the dead skin cells.  My favorite foot peel is Baby Foot.

It seems like nothing happens after you use it, but your feet will start peeling in a few days.  It's gross, but it really works!  You can read my full Baby Foot review here.

How Do You Exfoliate Dry Feet?

For best results, soak your feet in warm water before using a homemade sugar foot scrub.  You can add some baking soda to deodorize and soften the skin.  Then pat the skin dry.

Use this homemade foot scrub to remove dead skin.  Work it in a circular motion all around your feet.  Then rinse your feet to remove the sugar.

There is oil in this foot scrub for dry feet.  You can wash it off, but it's really best to let it soak in for 10 to 15 minutes.

Be careful walking after using a sugar scrub for feet recipe because your feet will be oily!  Use this as an excuse to sit back and relax for a few minutes while the oil soaks in.

Should You Exfoliate Feet Daily?

I know it's tempting to keep using a sugar scrub for feet recipe daily until all of the dead skin is gone, but you shouldn't use a foot scrub for dry feet daily.  It can irritate your skin, even with the carrier oils.

You can use this homemade foot scrub to remove dead skin once or twice a week.  I use a sugar foot scrub recipe twice a week until my feet get soft.  Then I use it once a week or every 10 days for maintenance.

How Do You Get Dead Skin Off your Feet Without a Pumice?

I like to use a DIY foot scrub with essential oils.  The sugar breaks the bonds that holds on the dead skin cells.

Sugar is a gentle abrasive, so it works by physically breaking the bonds that holds the dead skin cells on top of your skin.  Salt is more abrasive, and you can make either a salt or sugar scrub for feet recipe.

How Do I Make My Rough Feet Soft and Smooth?

You can use a heavy moisturizer every day, but if the oils can't reach your skin, then it won't help.  Follow these steps for soft feet:

  • Soak feet in warm water to soften the skin.  I like to use baking soda or sea salt in the water.  Pat your feet dry.
  • Use a homemade foot scrub to remove dead skin.  Rinse off the sugar, but don't use soap so the oils can moisturize your skin.
  • Follow with an intensive moisturizer or salve.  I like this cracked heel salve recipe or this calendula salve recipe.  For a premade cream, try this tea tree oil foot cream.  It's made with natural ingredients.

Carrier Oils for DIY Foot Scrub for Dead Skin

You'll need to use a carrier oil in this sugar scrub for foot recipe.  This diluted the essential oils, and it helps moisturize your skin.

I used the body oil base from Simply Earth.  It's a blend of moisturizing oils like jojoba oil camellia oil, and other oils.

You can also use a moisturizing oil.  I recommend using avocado oil, hemp seed oil, or castor oil.  These oils are very moisturizing, so they help combat dry skin.

You can learn more about different carrier oils and their benefits.
