How to Make Shaving Butter That Lathers

Learn how to make a homemade shaving cream that lathers.  This easy recipes has melt and pour soap in it, so it creates a rich lather while the coconut oil moisturizes your skin.  This homemade shaving cream recipe will leave your skin soft and smooth.

How to Make Shaving Butter For Legs

My legs used to get really irritated when I would shave.  No matter what I used, my lets would itch and be red for a few hours.

I started making my own homemade shaving cream recipe, and it leaves my skin incredibly soft.  However, it also makes the tub very slippery.

I got my Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box, and it has a homemade shaving cream that lathers.  This shaving butter recipe is easy to make, and it's not as oily as my other one.

Coconut oil can clog pores, so I wouldn't recommend this for men to use on their faces.  I do have a melt and pour shaving soap that my husband swears by.  I've been making it for him for over 10 years.

What is Shave Butter Made Of?

Shave butter is firmer and more moisturizing than shaving cream.  It is thicker due to the oils and butters.  You can learn more about natural butters for the skin here.

Some recipes use shea butter or cocoa butter.  I used solid coconut oil for this shaving butter for legs.

How Do You Make Shaving Butter?

This whipped shaving cream recipe has melt and pour soap, water, coconut oil, essential oils, and a preservative.  I like the simplicity of the recipe and the fact that it lathers well.

Is Shave Butter Better Than Shaving Cream?

If you buy shaving cream or shave butter in the store, shaving cream lathers while shave butter doesn't lather.  Shave butters are thicker and more moisturizing, so they are better for sensitive skin or those who get irritated by shaving.

So what do you do if you need the extra moisturization from the butter but still want a lather?  Learn how to make shaving butter that lathers.

This homemade shaving cream without shea butter has coconut oil to moisturize your skin, but it still lathers from the soap.

Can You Use a Brush With Shave Butter?

You don't need to use a shaving brush to use a natural shave butter.  Simply scoop out about a tablespoon of this shaving butter recipe and apply to your skin.  You'll want to rub it to make a thin layer on your skin.

Do You Wet Your Skin Before Applying Shave Butter?

Yes, you should wet your skin before applying this whipped shaving cream recipe.  I recommend using this homemade shaving cream that lathers in the shower so you can let the hair get wet for a few minutes to soften it before shaving.

Can You Use Shave Butter With an Electric Razor?

No, electric razors are meant to be used dry.  Do not use a natural shave butter with an electric razor.

How Do You Make a Lathering Shaving Cream?

I added melt and pour soap to my shaving butter recipe.  Some recipes call for liquid castile soap, but it doesn't lather well.

Melt and pour soap doesn't lather as well as cold process soap.  However, adding coconut oil helps boost the lather and makes it more creamy.

How Do You Make Shaving Cream Out of Soap?

Making a whipped shaving cream recipe is very easy.  I melted the soap in water to dilute it.  Then add coconut oil and essential oils and whip.

Preservatives for a Natural Shave Butter

Since you add water to this homemade shaving cream without shea butter, it does need a preservative.  A whipped shaving cream recipe with just butters and oils doesn't need a preservative to be shelf stable, but this recipe does.

I used Geogard ECT as a natural preservative.  It's a combination of four different substances that prevent microbes from growing.

It's odor free and offers broad spectrum protection from yeast, bacteria, and mold.

You can also use a different preservative, but you'll have to calculate how much to use for this recipe because each preservative has a different usage rate.

Shaving Butter for Legs Ingredients

I doubled the Simply Earth recipe.  You will need the following to make a DIY shaving cream for legs:

How Do You Make Whipped Shave Butter?

Step #1

Use a double boiler to heat the soap and water over medium heat.  Heat until the soap is completely melted.  Be careful not to let it get too hot and let the soap and water bubble.

Step #2

When the soap is melted, carefully remove from heat and stir.  Let it cool until it starts to gel.  Add the Geoguard ECT once the mixture is cool.

Step #3

In a separate bowl, add the coconut oil and essential oils and stir.  Use a hand mixture to whip the oils.  Slowly add the soap mixture while whipping.

The shaving butter for legs will start to form a butter like consistency.

To use your natural shave butter, apply a small amount to wet skin.  Rub in a circular motion to spread the butter.  Shave and rinse.

This DIY shaving cream for legs does have a preservative, but try not to introduce much water into the jar while shaving.  I set mine on the sink and grab what I need while in the shower.

If you do not use a preservative, store this shaving cream recipe in the fridge for up to two weeks.
