How to Make EOS Lip Balm at Home

Learn how to make EOS lip balm at home with this easy recipe.  This is a basic lip balm recipe that is light and glossy with a hint of vanilla flavor.

DIY EOS Lip Balm

EOS Lip balm has a huge following, and people just love their lip balm.  It's a lighter formula that's more of a gloss than a balm, so it's perfect for daily use while you're out and about.

Personally, I love the shape.  I am constantly losing the little plastic or cardboard tubes, but the unique EOS lip balm container shape is easier to find in my purse.

My daughter is also obsessed with this unique lip balm container and the product, so I wanted to learn how to make DIY EOS lip balm to make more flavors.

How is EOS Lip Balm Made?

Part of the fun of this lip product is the unique shape.  Instead of using a traditional plastic or paper tube, you'll need a special mold to make DIY EOS lip balm.

Then you simply melt the ingredients and pour into the mold.  Then let cool, flip, and you have the round shape for your final product.

Can You Refill EOS Lip Balm?

Yes, you can refill your empty container and refill with a DIY EOS lip balm recipe.  To do this, empty your container and clean it well.

Place the wheel part in the top of the container and screw them together.  Then you can melt the ingredients and pour it into the mold.

Then when it sets up, snap the top into the bottom piece.  Finally, unscrew the lid, and it should look as good as new.

Do You Need a Preservative in Lip Balm?

You do not need a preservative to make DIY EOS lip balm.  There are no water based ingredients, so you do not need to use a preservative.

This homemade EOS lip balm recipe will last for about 6 months after you make it.

Where to Buy Containers for DIY EOS Lip Balm

You can reuse your containers are using up the balm or buy empty sphere containers to use.

Personally, I don't bother refilling the containers.  I'm all about reducing and reusing, but the oils make them hard to clean.

How to Flavor DIY EOS Lip Balm Recipe

I made mine a vanilla homemade EOS lip balm recipe, but you can make your own flavor.  Here are some ideas to try:

  • Essential Oils.  For a natural flavor, try using essential oils.  Be sure that you use skin safe essential oils and don't use more than 0.5 to 1 percent dilution.  Use an essential oil dilution chart to calculate.
  • Candy Flavoring.  You can also use candy flavor oils like LorAnn flavor oils.  These work really well and have a variety of flavors.
  • Flavor Oils.  You can also use flavor oils.  These can be used for lip products and are available in a variety of fun flavors.
  • Absolutes.  Cocoa absolute and vanilla absolute can also be used.

Be careful using fragrance oils unless they are labeled as safe for use in lip products.  Some might be skin safe but not safe for lips.

  1. I know you specify Shea butter in your recipe, but I have a ton of cocoa butter. Can I replace the Shea for cocoa butter? Will I need to increase the beeswax for the lower melting point of the cocoa btr?
Thanks for the recipe and the absolute best details for making these EO lip balms!
