Is Greek Yogurt Good for Hair Mask?

I prefer to use Greek yogurt.  It's thicker, so there is less water content.  It's higher in protein and vitamins for its volume since there's less water.

Can I Use Flavored Yogurt on my Hair?

Whether you use regular yogurt or Greek yogurt, it's best to use unflavored yogurt.

Can I Leave Yogurt in my Hair Overnight?

Yogurt Benefits for Hair

Yogurt is good for your body when you eat it, and it's also great for your hair and scalp.  There haven't been many studies regarding yogurt for hair, but some cultures have been using yogurt on their hair for generations.

Yogurt is deep conditioning for your hair.  Yogurt, especially Greek yogurt, is high in protein to strengthen your hair.

Hair Growth

Yogurt has lactic acid that can clean the scalp, exfoliate dead skin cells, and promote hair growth.

Using yogurt won't magically make your hair thicker right away, but it might help more hair grow since it clears out your pores to make hair growth easier.

Yogurt has some natural anti-fungal properties.  Dandruff is caused by a fungus, so applying yogurt to your scalp may help reduce dandruff and flakes.

Yogurt is moisturizing, so it adds moisture and nourishes the hair.  This also helps reduce frizzy hair temporarily.

Dull Hair

Yogurt helps add shine to dull hair.  Your hair will look healthier and shinier after using a yogurt hair mask DIY recipe.

How to Apply a Yogurt Hair Mask

  1. Apply the mask to dry hair.
  2. Apply the mask to all of your hair and then massage it on your scalp.  I section my hair to make sure each strand gets covered.
  3. Let sit for 20 to 30 minutes.  I use a shower cap so it doesn't drip and make a mess.
  4. Rinse the yogurt out with warm water.  I follow with washing and conditioning my hair.

Best Yogurt for a Yogurt Hair Mask

I use my homemade Instant Pot cold start yogurt recipe.  I don't add any sweetener or flavoring.
If you buy yogurt, I suggest a Greek yogurt because it's higher in protein.  Any yogurt that you use should be sugar free and unflavored.

If you don't eat yogurt, you don't have to throw away leftover yogurt.  I freeze it in these silicone ice cube trays.

When I want to make a mask, I put three to four cubes in a bowl and thaw overnight in the fridge.  Frozen yogurt might separate or have a different consistency, but it retains its yogurt hair mask benefits for your hair.

Yogurt Hair Mask for Damaged Hair

If you use heat styling tools often, your hair may be damaged.  This mask combines yogurt and the rich fats of avocado for a deeply moisturizing mask that won't weigh down your hair.

  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 1/2 of an avocado, mashed
  • 3 teaspoons raw honey

Combine yogurt, masked avocado, and raw honey.  Stir well and apply to dry hair.  Let sit for 30 minutes and rinse.

Yogurt Hair Mask for Dandruff or Itchy Scalp

Yogurt helps kill the fungus that causes dandruff.  Both yogurt and and honey moisturize your hair and scalp, which can help reduce flakes.  Coconut oil helps kill germs and moisturize the scalp and hair.

Combine all ingredients.  If the coconut oil is solid, melt in the microwave until soft but not melted.

Then mix with the other ingredients.  Spread of hair and massage into scalp.  Wait 30 minutes and rinse well.  Wash and condition as usual.

Yogurt Mask for Frizzy Hair

Bananas are excellent for your hair.  They have vitamins and minerals that help nourish the hair to reduce frizzy hair and add volume.

  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1/2 banana, mashed
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey

Combine yogurt, masked banana, and raw honey.  Apply to dry hair and let sit for 30 minutes.  Rinse well and wash hair.

Greek Yogurt Hair Mask for Oily Hair

Yogurt moisturizes and softens hair without weighing it down or making it oily, so it makes a great mask for oily hair.  You can use yogurt plain or add baking soda.

Combine yogurt and baking soda.  Apply to hair and let sit for 20 to 30 minutes.  Rinse well and wash as usual.

Yogurt Hair Mask for Dry Hair

I prefer to use argan oil or macadamia oil for my hair masks.  You can use olive oil or coconut oil, but they are heavier oils that can weigh down your hair.

Combine all ingredients.  Apply to your hair and let sit for half an hour.  Rinse well and wash.
