DIY Easter Gifts Bunny Butt Bath Melts Recipe

This DIY Easter gifts bunny butt bath melts recipe makes a cute Easter gift for tweens, teens, or friends.  It's made with shea butter and cocoa butter to moisturize the skin and an emulsifier so the oils mix with the water and don't just sit on top.

I have to admit that we don't go all out for Easter.  The bunny brings some small things for the kids, but he keeps it limited in price and quantity.

We do have a big meal with family and spend time hanging out, playing games, and just enjoying being with family.

I have some decorations, but we don't go all out decorating like we do for Christmas. However, I do really enjoy making spring DIY bath and body recipes for spring and Easter.

After the long winter, it's time to get out my lighter scents and cute molds, like this bunny butt mold.

Bunny butts are so popular this year, and I'm sure they will be next year.  I actually had a hard time deciding what to make with the mold, so I'll definitely be using it again next year for something different.
I've made emulsified bath melt recipes before, but I wanted to try something a little different with the coloring this time.  I love how it turned out; bright and fun.

EASTER BUNNY BUTT BATH MELTS RECIPE

If you've never used a bath melt before, then you'll love this simple DIY bath recipe.  Bath melts are made with natural body butters that melt when you add them to the bath.
Most recipes just call for body butters or carrier oils, but I added an emulsifier to mine.  An emulsifier lets the oils and water mix, so you'll be surrounded by the skin softening and moisturizing butters and oils.

Without an emulsifier, the oils would just sit on the top of the water.  You'll smell good after the bath, but you won't get the moisturizing benefits of the butters and oils.

COCOA BUTTER

I used cocoa butter in a higher percentage because it's a hard butter at room temperature.  It's high in antioxidants for your skin.
Cocoa butter is moisturizing due to the fatty acids.  It helps nourish the skin and moisturize it, so it's great for dry skin.

SHEA BUTTER

Shea butter is my favorite body butter.  It's softer at room temperature, so it helps soften this bath melts recipe.

Shea butter has vitamins A, E, and F to nourish your skin.  The fatty acids are also very moisturizing for your skin, and it's my favorite butter to use for dry skin.
Shea butter isn't greasy, so you won't feel oily after using this cute DIY bath melt recipe.

EMULSIFYING WAX

You don't have to use emulsifying wax in this recipe, but I highly recommend it.  If you don't use it, the butters sit on top of the water because they won't mix with the water.  You won't get all of the skin loving benefits of using cocoa butter and shea butter, but it will smell good.
Emulsifying wax is an emulsifier; it's attracted to both water and the butters in this recipe.  This helps disperse the shea butter and cocoa butter throughout the bath, so your skin gets the moisturizer all over instead of just at the surface of the water.

Some brands of emulsifying wax are harder to blend than others.  I buy mine at at Amish store in bulk, so I really don't know what brand it is.  I have to stir for a full two minutes or I'll get light spots on my bath melts.

No matter which brand you use, I recommend stirring well so it mixes properly.  If you do get white spots, they won't hurt your final product.
Once you buy the emulsifying wax, you can use it in other recipes like this peppermint mocha emulsified whipped salt scrub.

FRAGRANCE

Since this bath melt is high in cocoa butter, it has a wonderful chocolate scent.  I decided to keep that scent and added some Chocolate natural fragrance oil from Crafty Bubbles.  This is new and not listed in their catalog, so email them or call to order it.

You can also use cocoa absolute.  Cocoa absolute will run you about $20 to $30 an ounce.  The Crafty Bubbles chocolate is $4.50 for 1 ounce, and it smells amazing.  A little goes a long way, too.  I use about 25 percent less than I'd normally use.

MOLD

I picked up my Easter bunny butt mold from Joann's.  It's hard to find since it's seasonal, so I had to order mine online and get it shipped to my house.

You can also find a cute one on Amazon or there's this one on Etsy.

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

STEP #1

Dust the mica powder over the mold.  I put about 1/8 of a teaspoon of mica in a measuring spoon and lightly tapped the spoon as I moved it over the mold.  I used less than half of the mica that I had on the spoon.
I used white, blue, and pink to dust my mold.

STEP #2

Measure the shea butter, cocoa butter, and emulsifying wax by weight using a digital scale.  Melt in a double boiler or in a 2 cup Pyrex measuring cup in a pan of water.  I set the measuring cup on a canning jar ring so it's lifted off the bottom of the pan.
Heat over medium heat until melted.  Stir it every few minutes.

STEP #3

Remove from heat and let it cool to less than 180 degrees.  I use a laser thermometer to check the temperature.
Add 20 drops of Chocolate natural fragrance oil.

STEP #4

Pour the melted butters into the mold over the mica.  Let sit until fully hardened.

These don't take long at all to harden, but be patient.  They will be soft and could smudge if you unmold them too soon.  Let them sit for about two hours before you unmold them.

I love the look of the mica dusted on the mold versus stirring it into the melted butters before you pour.  This looks more like glitter, and the colors don't mix.
