HOW TO MAKE AN HERBAL APPLE CIDER VINEGAR HAIR RINSE RECIPE FOR ANY HAIR TYPE

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR HAIR BENEFITS

Apple cider vinegar is excellent for your hair and skin.  It's inexpensive and easy to find at most grocery stores, so I like recommending it in my DIY beauty recipes.

First, let's talk about raw apple cider vinegar and why I prefer it to the ACV from the store.  They are both made the same way, but you'll noticed that raw ACV has some spider web looking stuff at the bottom of the bottle.

That's called "The Mother".  It's bacteria and enzymes that haven't been filtered out.   Learn how to make apple cider vinegar with the mother.

You can use regular ACV for this herbal apple cider vinegar hair rinse recipe, but the raw ACV is better for your hair.

Apple cider vinegar has many benefits for your hair.  Before we discuss them, let's talk about the structure of your hair.

There are two parts to your hair.  In the skin is a hair follicle and the shaft is what you see above the skin.

Your skin, including your scalp, has sebaceous glands that secrete an oil called sebum.  Sebum lubricates the skin and your hair and is part of the acid mantle.

The acid mantle is a film that protects your hair and skin.  The acid mantle is what helps the cuticle stay flat.

When the cuticle of the shaft of the hair opens, your hair is dull, prone to tangles, and looks and feels unhealthy.  A closed cuticle also prevents moisture loss, so your hair will tend to get dry if the cuticle stays open for weeks or months.

The acid mantle is important for your hair and skin, but it's easily disrupted.  It has a pH of 5, so it's just slightly acidic.

Many hair products have a pH of 7 or higher.  This can cause the hair to be alkaline, which opens the cuticle.  This means you're likely to get dull, frizzy hair that's prone to breakage.

Enter apple cider vinegar.

This herbal apple cider vinegar rinse helps lower the pH of your hair.  ACV has a pH of 3, so it's acidic.

When you dilute it with water, it helps the hair maintain a pH of around 5 to protect the acid mantle.
This helps close the cuticle for smoother, shinier hair with less frizz.

ACV also has vitamins B and C and potassium for hair health.  Another benefit is that ACV naturally has alpha-hydroxy acid to exfoliate your scalp.  This can also help remove product buildup that can weigh down the hair.

HERBS

You can use one or more of the following herbs.  I usually just use one herb, but you can use two or three if you'd like.  I don't recommend using more than that because once you dilute it, there won't be much benefit of each herb.
