Benefits of Making Homemade Lavender Salve

Making your own lavender salve lets you control exactly what goes into your skin care products. You can choose the carrier oil, adjust the firmness of the salve, and decide whether or not to add lavender essential oil.

A homemade lavender balm can be:

  • Easy and inexpensive to make
  • Made with simple ingredients
  • Customized to your preferred consistency
  • Stored in small tins for convenient use
  • A great addition to a DIY herbal skin care collection
  • A lovely handmade gift

Keep in mind that homemade salves are cosmetic products and shouldn't be considered treatments for medical conditions.

Choosing a Carrier Oil for Lavender Salve

The lavender infused oil is the main ingredient in this recipe. I used avocado oil because it is excellent for dry skin.  However, you can use a different carrier oil.  Learn more about carrier oils and their benefits for skin.

You can make your lavender-infused oil with:

Each carrier oil gives your finished lavender salve slightly different characteristics. Choose an oil based on the texture and feel you prefer.

Simply Earth has a large selection of carrier oils.  I love their oils, and you can get your essential oils and beeswax to save on shipping.

Do You Need Lavender Essential Oil?

No. Lavender essential oil is optional in this homemade salve recipe.

The infused lavender oil already gives the salve its herbal character. Adding a few drops of lavender essential oil simply gives the finished product a stronger lavender scent.

If you prefer an unscented salve, you can leave the essential oil out completely.

How to Make Lavender Infused Oil

You will first need to infuse the lavender and oil.  To do this, fill a pint jar about 1/4 full of dried lavender.  Then cover with your desired carrier oil, making sure to completely cover the herbs.

Then cover and let sit in a dark cool place for 4 to 6 weeks.  Strain out the herbs and save the oils.

How to Make Lavender Salve

This easy lavender salve recipe makes three 2-ounce tins.

Ingredients and Supplies

Directions

1. Pour the beeswax pellets into the lavender infused oil. Heat in a double boiler until the beeswax is melted.  Stir often.  Beeswax has a high melt point, so this can take a while.  Just keep stirring.

2. Remove from heat and let cool slightly while stirring.  Add 5–10 drops of lavender essential oil.

3. Pour the mixture into a tin or glass container.

4. Let it sit without the lid on for 4–5 hours or until it fully hardens. Once it is hard, put the lid on.

5. Store in a dark place without much humidity. It can last up to a year when stored properly.

How to Adjust the Consistency

One of the nice things about making homemade salve is that you can customize the texture.

For a harder lavender salve, use 3 tablespoons of beeswax pellets. A firmer balm works well when you want a product that holds its shape easily.

For a softer lavender ointment, use two tablespoons of beeswax. A softer consistency makes the product easier to scoop and spread.

If you're making the recipe for the first time, you may want to make a small batch and adjust the beeswax in your next batch based on your preferred texture.

Can You Make Lavender Salve Vegan?

Yes! Traditional salves use beeswax to thicken and protect the balm, but you can substitute candelilla wax if you want to make a vegan lavender salve.

Candelilla wax is harder than beeswax, so you may need to experiment with the amount to achieve the consistency you prefer.  I recommend using about half to three-quarters the amount of candelilla wax for the same consistency.

Tips for Making Lavender Salve

For the best results, keep these tips in mind:

  • Use completely dry containers. Water and moisture can shorten the shelf life of homemade oil-based products.
  • Don't overheat the oil. You only need enough heat to melt the beeswax.
  • Stir well. Make sure the beeswax is completely incorporated into the infused oil.
  • Add essential oils after melting. This helps preserve the aroma of the lavender essential oil.
  • Let the tins cool uncovered. Allow the salve to fully harden before adding the lids.
  • Label your tins. Include the name of the product and the date you made it so you can easily keep track of your homemade products.
  • Mix herbs.  You can combine the lavender with chamomile or calendula for more skin benefits.

Making your own lavender salve is an easy way to create a simple homemade body care product with a few ingredients. Lavender infused oil forms the base, while beeswax transforms the oil into a convenient solid balm.
