DIY Essential Oil Drawer Freshener

How to make a DIY essential oil drawer freshener.  This easy tutorial uses essential oils to naturally remove odors.

Fall is coming.  Have you smelled your sweater drawer lately?  Has it taken on a funky scent in the last few months?

Learn how to keep clothe smelling fresh in drawers with an easy drawer deodorizer DIY.  This is a simple sachet that takes only a few minutes to make.  Place it in a drawer to freshen your clothes in just a few hours.

I'll also give you a few more ideas to remove odors and keep your clothes smelling great.

How to Keep Clothes Smelling Fresh in Drawers (DIY Essential Oil Drawer Freshener)

Clean the Drawer

If your clothes have taken on a funky scent in the drawer, you might need to clean the drawer.  Remove all of the clothes.  Vacuum if necessary and then wipe with an antibacterial cleanser.

I really like Odoban Disinfectant to get rid of odors.  BioKleen all purpose cleaner is also a good one.

You can also use vinegar diluted 1 to 1 in water and spray that.

If the drawer has a strong odor, remove it from the dresser and let it sit in the sunlight all day.  Repeat as necessary.

Let the wood dry completely before putting clothes back in.

Clean Clothes

You may need to launder or dry clean the clothes at this point.  If you can't launder them or dry clean right now, you can try an odor eliminating spray.

I use this fabric odor eliminating spray to neutralize odors.  Always do a spot test to make sure it's safe for your fabrics.

If you do spray your clothes, let them dry completely before folding and putting away.

Odor Eliminating Products

My favorite odor eliminating product is baking soda.  But it's not always practical to put baking soda in your drawer because it can get messy.

Charcoal also works really well to absorb and neutralize odors.  This set of 6 charcoal bags will work for up to 6 drawers, or you can place them in other areas like your car.

Essential Oils

My drawer deodorizer DIY uses both clove and blood orange essential oils.  Both are excellent for deodorizing and getting rid of odors.

Blood orange is a reddish orange color, so it's important to let this dry completely before you put it in the drawer so you don't stain your clothes.

You could also use defender.  I prefer the scent of the blood orange and clove together, but defender is really good for reducing odors.

Sachet

My sachet was included in my box.  If you need to get one, you can get cotton sachets on Etsy in different quantities.

What Do You Put in Drawer Sachets?

This particular DIY uses a cotton ball.  It's inexpensive and easy to find.  You can also use rice, Epsom salts, or potpourri.

How Long Does a Drawer Sachet Last?

Essential oils don't last as long as artificial fragrances.  This drawer deodorizer DIY should last for at least a month.

When you can't smell it anymore, just refresh with the same essential oils.  You can also use a new cotton ball and use different oils.

Directions

Step #1

Put the cotton ball in a bowl to protect your counter or table.  Add the essential oil drops and let dry completely.

This should last for a month, but you can refresh it as needed.  Just put more essential oils on the cotton ball.
