Essential Oil Blends for Valentine's Day + Potpourri With Essential Oils DIY

Make your home smell amazing this Valentine's Day with this easy potpourri with essential oils DIY craft.  Use essential oil blends for Valentine's Day for the perfect aromatherapy combination for your taste and needs.

I haven't decorated for Valentine's Day in several years.  We need a little bit to de-Christmas, and then we have a January birthday and a February birthday.  Valentine's Day seems to get lost in birthday season.

This year, I decided to do some fun DIY projects.  I wanted to make a natural air freshener with a fun Valentine's Day scent.

I found these adorable clear plastic hearts, so I used them to hold the potpourri.  They hang, so you can use them in the closet or anywhere else.

I have one hanging on the cabinet in the bathroom.  I also stuck one in my dresser drawer to freshen my sweaters this winter.

Essential Oil Blends for Valentine's Day

I used essential oils to make my potpourri.  I made my own blend, but you can use a blend or a single oil if you prefer.

Roses are the most popular choice for Valentine's Day, but rose essential oil is very expensive.  For a more affordable option, look at rose otto or rose absolute.

Rose absolute is the least expensive option.  It's processed through chemical extraction, so it can't be considered a true essential oil.  However, most people refer to it as an essential oil.  It has a true rose fragrance, so most people prefer to use it instead of rose essential oil.

Rose otto is a true essential oil made from steam distillation. It's sometimes diluted with a carrier oil, so look for that on the label. Diluting it helps cut the cost, but rose otto is still very concentrated.

What Essential Oil Blend Well With Rose?

Rose essential oil blends well with clary sage, sandalwood, frankincense, geranium, ylang ylang, and patchouli.

What Essential Oil Blends Well With Jasmine?

Jasmine is also a popular essential oil for Valentine's Day.  It blends well with florals like rose, lavender, clary sage, ylang ylang, bergamot, and sandalwood.

Single Oils

If you want to use single oils and not make a blend, try one of these oils:

Valentine's Day Essential Oil Blends

If you want to make your own blends, try one of these:

Romantic Blends

  • 2 drops rose otto, 3 drops tangerine
  • 3 drops grapefruit, 2 drops jasmine absolute
  • 3 drops geranium, 2 drops jasmine absolute, 1 drop rose absolute
  • 4 drops sweet orange, 1 drop ylang ylang
  • 2 drops geranium, 1 drop sweet orange, 1 drops patchouli, 1 drop clary sage
  • 3 drops frankincense, 1 drop cinnamon, 1 drop sandalwood, 1 drop myrhh
  • 2 drops juniper berry, 2 drops lime, 1 drop clary sage

Fun Blends

  • 3 drops patchouli, 2 drops ylang ylang, 1 drop lime
  • 2 drops clary sage, 2 drops cedarwood, 1 drop wild orange
  • 3 drops lime, 2 drops wild orange, 1 drop ylang ylang
  • 2 drops wild orange, 1 drops ylang ylang, 1 drop cedarwood, 1 drop sandalwood
You can either use the drops directly on the potpourri or make a master blend.  I recommend making a master blend because depending on how much potpourri you use, you may need more or less drops of oils than what is in a blend.

I buy empty amber bottles with droppers and use those for blends.  This bottle isn't labeled in the photos, but I highly recommend labeling your bottles.  I write the name and the blend on in so I can make more easily.

I buy blank labels and hand write them.  I had dreams of using my die cutter to make them, but I never found the time.

Premade Blends

Making your own blends is great if you have the oils, but it can get expensive otherwise.  I have a lot of oils, but I really like the blends from Simply Earth.  Love essential oil blend is a blend of amyris, bergamot, sweet orange, & ylang ylang.

Spark Naturals also has a Bliss essential oil blend that has several of these oils in it. It's a blend of Lavender, Sweet Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood and Vanilla.

Potpourri

I got my potpourri from a store in Amish country.  They have a wall of containers with different dried flowers and herbs.  You can mix and match them to create a blend.

If there isn't such a store near you, you can order bulk potpourri from Amazon or Etsy.

The set on Amazon has jasmine, rosebud, lavender, marigold, chamomile, and pink rose petals. It also comes with 2 ml of rose absolute.

The set on Etsy has dried petals, dried roses, miniature roses, lavender, daisies, baby's breath, wattle, and daisy petals.

Heart Containers

The exact heart containers I used are 100mm in width and made by Darice.  Unfortunately, they aren't available anymore.

You can get a set of 6 fillable heart ornaments on Etsy that are slightly smaller at 3 inches wide.  Amazon has a set of 10 that are 100 mm and the same size that I used.

How to Make Potpourri With Essential Oils

Supplies

  • 100 mm clear plastic hearts (Amazon or Etsy)
  • Dried bulk potpourri  (Amazon or Etsy)
  • Essential oils
  • Ribbon or jute twine

Directions

Step #1

Place your potpourri in a bowl and add essential oils until you're happy with the scent.  How much you use depends on what brand of oils you use and how strong you want it to be.  Use less if you're placing this in a drawer or small space.  Stir to combine.

Step #2

Fill one side of the plastic heart.  I overfilled it so it was overflowing so when I put the lid on they were still full.  Place the lid on top.

Step #3

Repeat with the rest of the heart containers.  Tie a ribbon to them and hang or place in a drawer.

This is an easy Valentine's Day craft.  I hope you enjoy it!

I wanted to use jute because I live in a farm house, but I ended up liking the bigger ribbon.  It's personal preference.
