How to make a DIY rice water sheet mask recipe.  This easy and inexpensive sheet mask recipe  helps moisturize and hydrate the skin, evens skin tone, and soothes irritated skin

Sheet masks are my latest beauty obsession.  They are easy to use, and I love the benefits they have for my skin.

I don't love the price, however.  Each sheet mask will set you back anywhere from $2 to $20.  If you use one or two a week, it can really add up!

This DIY rice water sheet mask recipe is easy to make, and you can make it for less than 10 cents.  It's very affordable, and you know exactly what ingredients are in it.  There are no dyes, preservatives, or other ingredients that you may not want to use on your face.

You can use rice water on your face in a spray or by using a cotton ball to swipe it on your skin, but I really prefer using a sheet mask.

Japanese and Korean women have been using rice water for their hair and skin for generations.  It's inexpensive and loaded with beauty benefits that we'll talk about in a minute.

Rice Water Benefits for Skin

There are very few studies about using rice water for skin, so most of the research is anecdotal.  My thinking is that if women have been using it for generations and keep using it, then it must have some benefits for the skin.

Rice water has ferulic acid, an antioxidant that also nourishes the skin.  It's a natural source of allantoin.  Allantoin helps promote healing and soothes irritated skin.

I add allantoin to my lotion.  I used it in this after sun lotion with lilac infused oil.

Rice water also has vitamins to nourish your skin.  It's said to help reduce dark spots and even out your skin tone.

Rice water can also tighten your pores so they appear smaller.  Learn more about how to tighten pores naturally.

How to Make Rice Water for Face

Making rice water for your face is so easy, but it does take a few hours to infuse.

Before you make your rice water, rinse the rice to remove dirt or impurities.  You should always wash rice before cooking it or using it.

Then soak rice in water and let it sit for at least half an hour.  I like to let mine sit in the fridge overnight.

Strain out the rice, discard the rice, and save the rice water.  Put in a mason jar and save it up to a week in the fridge.

How Do You Make a Rice Water Mask?

You can spray your rice water on your skin or apply it with a cotton ball, but I like to make a DIY rice water sheet mask recipe.

Sheet masks are cotton or muslin masks that have holes cut for your mouth, nose, and eyes.  It is soaked with a face mask, rice water in this case, and applied to the skin.

The sheet mask helps hold the liquid to your skin and prevents evaporation.  This stops it from drying out and holds the liquid close to your skin longer.

These are the sheet masks that I use.  They are less than 10 cents per mask, and there's enough in the pack to last you a long time!

These have really mixed reviews on Amazon, but I'm pleased with my pack.  It has 100 sheet masks that are thick enough not to rip, but thin enough to be comfortable as a sheet mask.

Fermented Rice Water

Some people think that fermented rice water has more benefits for your skin.  Again, there are very few studies to support the beauty benefits of rice water or fermented rice water.

To make fermented rice water, let the rice and water soak on the counter for 1-2 days.  When it smells sour, strain out the rice and store the rice water in the fridge.

How Long Do You Leave Rice Water on Your Face?

If you're using rice water as a spray or on a cotton ball, you can leave it on overnight.  I wouldn't leave this DIY rice water sheet mask recipe on overnight though.  It will dry and get hard, so it won't be comfortable.

You can leave this sheet mask on for about 15 to 20 minutes for best results.

Uses for Leftover Rice Water

You'll have some rice water left, but it doesn't have to go to waste.  You can use it as a spot treatment for eczema.  I dip a cotton ball in the rice water and set it on my eczema for several minutes.

You can also use it as a hair rinse.  Shampoo your hair and condition as usual.  Pour the rice water over your hair and work it into your hair and massage the scalp with it.  Rinse well.
