DIY Unicorn Bath Bomb

This DIY unicorn bath bomb is easy to make!  Use mica to paint stripes on the bath bombs for a fun and unique look that's easy to replicate at home.  This uses a natural fragrance oil called Unicorn Kisses for the scent.

My daughter is 12, and like most 12-year-old girls, she's obsessed with unicorns.  She likes most things with fun colors (especially pink) and glitter, too.  She also loves bath bombs.

Since she has a cool mom, I let her help make some DIY unicorn bath bombs.  Most unicorn bath bombs have alternating colors, but I wanted something that was easier for her to make.

I decided to have her paint the bath bombs with mica for unicorn colors.  I really like this because it's different, and you can make several different kinds of bath bombs.

It was also easier for her to do without worrying about mixing different colors and forming the bath bomb while alternating colors.

If you're making these DIY unicorn bath bombs as gifts, you can make different designs with the colors to make fun set for the recipient.

DIY Unicorn Bath Bombs

Dry Ingredients

For the dry ingredients, I used baking soda, citric acid, arrowroot powder, Epsom salt, and kaolin clay.  Citric acid and baking soda are what makes these DIY unicorn bath bombs fizz.

When they come in contact with water, they create a chemical reaction that releases carbon dioxide to create a fun fizz.

Like a true homeschooling mom, even something fun like making bath bombs becomes a science experiment.

I added arrowroot powder and kaolin clay to harden the bath bombs.  If you just use baking soda and citric acid, your bath bombs will be soft and likely to crumble.

I added some Epsom salts because they help detox.  They have magnesium in them, and the magnesium can be absorbed through the skin too boost magnesium levels in the body.

Wet Ingredients

I used coconut oil and polysorbate 80 for wet ingredients.  I added coconut oil because it's a solid at room temperature.  This helps firm and strengthen the bath bomb so it won't crumble.

Coconut oil is also moisturizing for your skin.  It has fatty acids that moisturize the skin, which is good if you have dry skin.  My daughter has dry skin, so I like to use carrier oils on her skin to moisturize and prevent dry skin.

The coconut oil and mica won't mix with the water, so they just sit on top of the water.  They will form a foam on top that isn't very pretty and leave a ring on the tub.

I added polysorbate 80 to act as an emulsifier.  It binds with both oil and water, so it helps the coconut oil and mica get dispersed in the water.  This also help make the bathtub less slippery after you use this DIY unicorn bath bomb.

Unicorn Kisses

I asked the owner of Crafty Bubbles for a unicorn blend, something fun and fruity.  He created a Unicorn Kisses blend that has a mix of fruits and berries.

He made it with natural fragrance oils.  These are natural, but they have scents that you can't find in essential oils, like fruit scents.

It's a very fun scent.  I use it as a perfume and diffuse it when I want the house to smell good.

Mica

You'll use mica to paint the bath bombs to turn them into fun unicorn bath bombs.  I bought ORAK mica powder from Amazon.

It has 24 different colors.  Each bag has 0.1 ounces.  That doesn't seem like a lot, but I'm pretty sure I'll be using it for many years.  I've had it over a year and haven't used more than 5 percent of any of the bags.

I use the mica in soaps, bath bombs, scrubs, and pretty much most of my DIY beauty recipes.

Molds

I used my Makarios bath bomb molds.  I love this set because it's so sturdy.  The small bath bombs we made were from a different bath bomb mold that doesn't have a brand name.

I really prefer the Makarios bath bomb molds, but we had a little leftover and used a smaller one to use up the rest of the mix.

I used these bath bombs to make these easy bath bombs with Epsom salts and for my succulent bath bombs.

DIY Rice Water Sheet Mask Recipe

How to make a DIY rice water sheet mask recipe.  This easy and inexpensive sheet mask recipe  helps moisturize and hydrate the skin, evens skin tone, and soothes irritated skin.

Sheet masks are my latest beauty obsession.  They are easy to use, and I love the benefits they have for my skin.

I don't love the price, however.  Each sheet mask will set you back anywhere from $2 to $20.  If you use one or two a week, it can really add up!

How to make a DIY rice water sheet mask at home. Add this Korean inspired beauty product to your skin care routine. Rice water has many benefits for skin. It's hydrating, shrinks pores, and moisturizes the skin. This is the best and easy recipe for home made face masks. Make a face mask for less than 10 cents at home! White Chocolate Pumpkin Coffee Creamer Recipe Cinderella Latte At Home

The Cinderella latte is a secret Starbucks drink that combines a whole chocolate latte and the pumpkin spice latte.  Make it any time at home with this easy white chocolate pumpkin coffee creamer.

What if a white chocolate latte and a pumpkin spice latte got married and had a baby?  It would be a Cinderella latte!

I didn't name it, but the name makes sense.  Like in the movie, a pumpkin is turned into something completely magical.  But in the case of the drink, it turns into a magical, delicious coffee drink that you never knew you had to have.

I love white chocolate lattes and pumpkin spice lattes, so I knew that I had to try this Cinderella Latte.

How to make a White Chocolate Mocha Pumpkin aka Starbucks Cinderella latte coffee creamer recipe. This creamy DIY creamer can be made healthy or skinny or sugar free, low carb, dairy free (non dairy), or vegan depending on the milk and sweetener. Use almond milk or half and half. I drink coffee every day, so instead of making a single latte at home, I decided to make a white chocolate pumpkin coffee creamer instead.

You guys.  Angels were singing when I tried it.  It is amazing!

While I love my skinny pumpkin spice coffee creamer, the white chocolate adds a whole new layer of flavor.  It's creamy, smooth, and has a hint of pumpkin and spice.

Instant Pot Honey and Cinnamon Applesauce Recipe Sugar Free

This honey and cinnamon applesauce is easy to make in the Instant Pot.  It's sugar free, and I promise that you won't even miss the sugar!

When we came to the farm the first time, we were thrilled when we drove past a mature orchard.  The previous owners loved to cook and canned foods, so they planted an orchard.

They planted several types of apples, peaches, plums, and pears in the orchard.  Since she loved to cook, they planted several varieties so that they could make applesauce, pies, and have apples that were perfect for eating plain.

They didn't believe in using any chemicals, so the 200 tree orchard is all natural and organic.  I've had a lot of fun using the fruit to try new recipes in the last six years since we moved here.

I got an Instant Pot almost two years ago, and it's been invaluable in the kitchen.  I thought it was going to be just another appliance that took up space in my already too small kitchen, but I was wrong.

I use it at least four times a week for dinner or for dinner prep.  I wanted to find a way to use it for food preserving, so I started using my Instant Pot to make applesauce.

Since we try to eliminate excess sugar, I made my applesauce with honey so it's sugar free.  Depending on the type of apples you use, you may not need to use any sweetener.

Instant Pot Honey and Cinnamon Applesauce Recipe

I have a food mill, so making applesauce has always been fairly easy.  When I was growing up, my grandma used to get boxes and boxes of apples from an orchard.  Applesauce making day was a family event, and we all used to work together to make applesauce for the family for the next year.

I don't know what kind of apples she used, but she ended up with pink applesauce.  She didn't add any sugar or color, but it was plenty sweet and a pretty pink color.

When David started eating solid foods, I wanted to make baby food, including applesauce.  Applesauce is pretty easy to make with a food mill, but now I think I like this Instant Pot applesauce recipe better.

When I made applesauce before, I would quarter the apples and put them in a stock pot and cook them until they were soft.  I didn't add water, so I had to watch them the whole time.

When they were soft, I ran them though the food mill and either froze it or canned it.

I love my food mill, but it's a messy device.  If you're spending most of the day making applesauce, it's worth it.  But for small batches like this Instant Pot applesauce recipe, it's really not worth it.

Canning or Freezing

You can can or freeze the leftover applesauce in this recipe.  If you're going to can it, you should add 1/2 tablespoon of lemon juice per pint of applesauce and process for 20 minutes.

I normally freeze my applesauce.  I have a stand up freezer, but I still have more shelf space than freezer space.  I try to can most foods, but applesauce tastes better when frozen versus canned.

Frozen applesauce tends to be sweeter and firmer than canned applesauce.  I will can one batch of applesauce each year to save some freezer space.  I can it unsweetened and without any cinnamon and then use it in place of oil when I'm cooking.

Apples

For the best Instant Pot applesauce, start with the best apples.  Any apple variety will work, but some are better than others for sauce.

The best apples to use for sweet applesauce are:

  • Fuji
  • Cortland
  • Crispin
  • Golden Delicious
If you want more of a tart applesauce, try:

  • McIntosh
  • Jonamac
  • Gravenstein
I usually mix apples and try to get some sweet apples and some tart ones.  I think the best applesauce comes from a mix of apples.

Honey

If you do use sweet apples, you may not need any sweetener.  I don't use any sweetener for all sweet apples, but we don't use a lot of extra sweetener anyway.

The first time you make this or if you use a different kind of apple, I recommend making it without any honey and adding the honey after it cooks.

I recommend buying raw honey.  The honey sold in the grocery store can barely be called honey.  It's usually processed and has other ingredients added.

I buy a pint of local raw honey for about $10.  It's not too much more than what you'd find at the stores, and I'm supporting a local business.  I live in a rural area, so I can find local raw honey at most stores.

Makes: 4.25 cups

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs (about 5 medium-large) red apples*
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 to 1 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup raw honey, adjust to taste
  • large pinch of fine sea salt (or regular salt)

Instructions

Step #1

Peel and core the apples and cut them into 1 inch cubes. Place the apple pieces into the pressure cooker pot then sprinkle in the cinnamon and salt over them.  Pour in the honey and then the water.

Stir until the apple pieces are coated with cinnamon, honey, and sugar. Place the lid on the pressure cooker and set the pressure cooker valve to sealing then pressure cook on high for 5 minutes.

Step #2

Once the time is up, let the Instant Pot naturally release for 5 minutes.  Then turn the valve to vent and quick release the pressure.

Step #3

Carefully open the lid away from your face. Use a potato masher to mash the applesauce to your desired consistency, or you can also use a stick blender to blend until completely smooth.

If the applesauce is too liquidy for your taste you can set the pressure cooker to sauté and cook it down to your desired thickness.

Step #4

Taste and adjust honey if desired.

You can let it cool slightly and serve warm or allow to cool in the refrigerator until ready to serve. This applesauce will keep fresh in the fridge for about a week—if it lasts you that long.

Yum!  This Instant Pot applesauce recipe is so easy to make, and it takes about 20 minutes from start to finish.

Be warned though, this recipe may spoil you and your family.  You may not be able to get them to go back to store bought applesauce after eating this.

My kids always balk at sugar-free anything, so I didn't tell them that it didn't have sugar.  If I do use honey, I barely use any.  What they don't know won't hurt them, right?

The October 2019 Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe box is fall themed, specifically DIY natural fall candles.

It has:

You'll use these supplies, plus some of the supplies from the Bonus Box, to make 6 fall recipes.

  • Cassia and Orange Candle
  • Cassia and Balsam Fir Candle
  • Fall Diffuser Blend
  • Joint Pain Roll On

Cassia and Orange Candle

If you've always wanted to make DIY natural fall candles, Simply Earth makes it easy.  The only thing you'll need is a small container.

I used a 4-ounce canning jar to make my candles.  Be careful reusing an old candle container or a tea cup.  They are cute as candles, but they may not be able to be reheated over and over again.  Even an old candle container may not be able to stand being reheated after the candle burns.

Canning jars are designed to be heated over and over again, so you can reuse those.

Ingredients

Directions

Step 1

Melt soy wax, beeswax, and coconut oil in a double boiler.  Remove from heat once melted.

Step 2

Let cool to 180 degrees or lower (I use a laser thermometer) and add the essential oils.  Stir for 30 seconds.

Step 3

Dip the bottom of the wick into the melted wax and stick it to the bottom of the jar.  Prop it upright and carefully pour the wax into the jar.

Step 4

Let the candle cool completely, about 1 hour.  Trim the wick to 1/4 inch above the candle.

Keep away from children and pets while burning.  Always burn with care and within sight.

Cassia and Balsam Fir Candle

This candle is made the same was as the other candle.  Again, choose a container that's capable of handling heat.  I highly recommend a 4-ounce mason jar.

Fall Diffuser Blend

Make your home smell like fall with this diffuser blend.  You can use it once in a diffuser or make a master blend to use more often.

Ingredients

Directions

Simply add all to a diffuser.  To create a master blend, add 25 drops of each oil to your bottle.  Add 1 to 3 drops of this blend to your diffuser.

Joint Pain Roll On

Relive pain naturally with this joint pain roll on.  It's easy to make, and since it's a roller bottle it won't be messy.

Ingredients

Directions

Add the essential oils to the roller bottle.  Fill with the almond oil.  Place the roller back in the bottle and apply directly to aches and pains.

DIY Aromatherapy Rice Bag

I love using rice bags because they create a moist heat that seems to work better for me.

Ingredients

Directions

Step 1

Fill the sock half full with rice and then dump the rice into an empty bowl.  Add the essential oils and stir well.

Step 2

Pour the rice back into the sock.  Stitch shut or use a fabric glue.

Step 3

To use, microwave for about 1 minute.  You may need to adjust the time depending on the size of the rice pack and your microwave.  Be careful because it may be hot.
