Sugar Free Hot Chocolate Mix With SPLENDA® Naturals Stevia Sweetener Recipe

Last month, I posted about hidden sugars in foods and how I was going to omit excess sugars from my diet.  It's been a month, so I wanted to give you all an update.  I've heard that some people have a difficult time giving up sugar, but thankfully I did not.  I stocked up on healthy foods that I like, so I was able to enjoy good food that I actually like.  I also took the #GoodbyeSugar30 day challenge from SPLENDA®, so I replaced excess sugar with SPLENDA® Naturals Stevia Sweetener.  Keep reading for my results, how I felt during the challenge, and a new recipe that I used to help combat sweet cravings.

Maybe giving up excess sugar during Halloween wasn't the wisest choice.  I would be lying if I said that I didn't cheat at all.  I did.   However, I did make a conscious effort to make better choices.  For example, Sunday night is pizza night in our house.  It's been pizza night for more than 10 years.  I have two children with autism, so we do not deviate from the Sunday night pizza rule, even for holidays.  There is excess sugar in both the sauce and dough, so I didn't eat excess sugar on Saturdays or Sundays until dinner.  I also had a salad before I ate pizza, so I ate less pizza.  I'm not sure that I can live in a world without pizza, but I may try to make my own sauce with SPLENDA® Naturals Stevia Sweetener so I can omit some of the sugar.

I expected to have some strong cravings during the challenge, but I really didn't.  I was able to switch my favorite foods fairly easily.  Instead of using salad dressing, I switched to oil and vinegar.  I swapped croutons for sunflower seeds.  I also omitted sauces like ketchup and BBQ sauce and used herbs for flavor.  I wasn't depriving myself, and I was never went hungry.

I'm happy to report that I lost 5 pounds while doing the #GoodbyeSugar30 Day Challenge!  I was already down almost 20 pounds, so this puts me at just under 25 pounds gone since I started making better choices a few months ago.  

Hot Chocolate With SPLENDA® Naturals Stevia Sweetener Recipe

In the evenings, my husband and I will have a cup of tea or hot chocolate when the weather gets cold.  If I get a sweet craving, it's usually in the evening just before I go to bed.  Drinking hot chocolate satisfies my craving with fewer calories, but I wanted to omit the excess sugar too.  I made this hot chocolate with SPLENDA® Naturals Stevia Sweetener Recipe so it doesn't have excess sugar and is perfect for a little chocolate fix.  

  • 6 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup SPLENDA® Naturals Stevia Sweetener or to taste

Combine the unsweetened cocoa, dry milk, salt, cornstarch, and SPLENDA® Naturals Stevia Sweetener in a bowl and stir well.

Pour in to a mason jar or other container with a lid.

Add 1 teaspoon mix to 1 cup of hot water.  Stir well.  Enjoy!
