When my kids were in public school, their teachers frowned upon them having a fidget toy. My son would make one to use, then he would get in trouble. Then his stress level was high, which is when he needed the fidget toy the most. It was a viscous cycle that could have been avoided had his teacher known anything about autism. Before we go to the list of toys, lets talk a little bit about why fidgets are important. Fidget toys help a child regulate his sensory system. It provides just enough of a distraction so the child can block out stimuli and concentrate on their work. Some kids prefer a fidget toy that moves. Some like something that makes a noise. Other like to feel different textures.
For some kids on the spectrum, there are too many things coming at them. Lights, sounds, voices, the seam on their socks, and more. My son can hear lights. Fidget toys give their minds something to concentrate on to block out the sensory stimuli so they can concentrate easier.
