3 Tips For A Great Sunless Tan

A sunless tan is a great alternative to sunbathing or using a tanning bed because it does not increase your risk of skin cancer.  In the past, tanning solutions turned you orange and were likely to streak.  Today's formulas give you a natural glow that looks like you spent hours in the sun.  Here are some tips to help you get a great looking tan at home!

1.  Exfoliate

Sunless tanning products work by reacting with the outer layer of your skin.  When the active ingredient reacts with the dead skin cells, they darken to produce a natural looking tan.  Your body is constantly shedding dead skin cells as skin regenerates, so the tanned cells fall off leaving you with your natural complexion.

To make your tan last longer, exfoliate to remove the skin cells that are close to falling off.  By doing this, your tan can last up to two weeks before you need to reapply the solution.

2. Shower just before using

Tanning solution takes time to react with your skin, so bathe just before you tan.  This also helps get rid of oil on your skin so the tanning solution can reach your skin. Skip lotion or bath oil after your shower because these can lead to an uneven tan.  Avoid getting wet for several hours after your tan, and be careful when washing your hands.  One small drop of water can mean a big streak in your tan.

3.  Avoid dark areas

Areas with thick skin will get darker than the rest of your skin.  Use the sunless tanning solution lightly on knees, elbows, and ankles.  You can also rub a little bit of lotion in these areas to block some of the lotion.
