Summer Hair Care Tips

Last week, we talked about summer makeup and beauty tips to keep your makeup and skin looking flawless.  I gave you a few tips for your hair, but I wanted to devote an entire post to summer hair care because this is something that affects me each year.  Between the harsh sun and chlorine, my hair takes a beating, but I've been able to keep it healthy with these summer hair care tips.

Cut and Color Early

If you have split ends or are in need of a touch up, it's best to do them before summer hits.  Think about getting your hair trimmed and colored before the super hot weather starts so your hair will be at it's healthiest for the summer.

Cover Your Hair

UV rays from the sun can damage your hair just like they damage your skin.  If your hair is color treated, the sun can fade your color quickly.  When you'll be outside at the pool or doing yard work, wear a cute sun hat or scarf to protect your hair.  As a bonus, this will protect your hair from getting tangled in the wind.

Avoid Over Shampooing

When I get sweaty and hot in the summer, I want to wash my hair daily.  But daily washing can strip the natural oils from your hair and scalp, drying out your hair.  It's best to wash your hair every 2-3 days.  You can follow my tips for post workout hair care if you often get sweaty in the summer.

If you do have to wash your hair daily, use a mild shampoo and wash just your scalp.  When you rinse your hair, the suds will gently wash your hair.

Dry Shampoo

My favorite way to add another day between washing is to use a dry shampoo.  My favorite is Batiste Dry Shampoo because it leaves my hair soft.  I've used a few that left my hair crunchy, which definitely wasn't the look I was after!  I've also dusted some arrowroot powder in my hair to absorb excess oils and sweat.

Reduce Heat

The heat can really damage your hair, so try to limit the amount of heat you expose your hair to.  Try to air dry your hair instead of using a hair dryer.  Flat irons should also be avoided.  Luckily, messy styles are always in style for summer.  If you do need some heat for beachy waves or you want a straight style, opt for appliance that use lower heat.  For beachy waves or curls, I love my Conair Curl Secret.  I use the Conair Hot Brush for straight hair.  Both of them do use heat, but they use less heat than a curling iron or flat iron.

Protect Your Hair From Chlorine

If you'll be swimming, consider wearing a swim cap to protect your hair.  If you don't want to do that, wet your hair before you swim so your hair won't soak up as much chlorine from the pool.  After you swim, rinse your hair well and use a vinegar hair rinse to protect your hair.

Deep Condition

In the summer, your hair can get really dry.  I like to use a hot oil treatment to keep my hair looking good.  My favorite oils to use are coconut oil, avocado oil, and argan oil.  Sometimes I use the oil after I wash my hair in the shower.  Other times I put the oil on about half an hour before I wash my hair and let it sit.  I wash my hair but don't condition it.

If you follow these summer hair care tips, you should be able to keep your hair healthy all summer long.
