My Weight Loss Journey


Today, I'd like to talk about something personal.  Something that I've alluded to here, but I haven't fully discussed: my weight.  I've never been a thin person.  Even as a small child, I wasn't thin.  When I played softball and basketball, I was the biggest on the team.  As an adult, I was always the biggest person in the room.  That changed five years ago. When I was approached by Z Living to let you all know about their newest show,The Big Fat Truth, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to share my personal journey with you all.  Keep reading for my journey to better health.

When I was in college, I gained even more weight.  After graduation, I dieted by counting calories and lost about 40 pounds.  Then I got pregnant with my oldest, but I was able to maintain my weight loss after he was born.  I was looking and feeling great until a few years later.  I was pregnant three times in two years and had two babies.  I lost weight while I was pregnant and nursing, but I gained a lot of weight after each one weaned.  Eventually, I was at my highest weight ever.  And it was a number that I was not comfortable with.

I started eating a low-carb and good fat diet and using an at-home exercise program. I had a lot of determination, and I lost 90 pounds in a little over a year. I looked and felt great! I felt like I was a human again; people started treating me with a respect that I hadn't been given in several years.

Then life happened.  I stopped working out and went back to my old ways of eating, even though I knew that carbs were not my friend. 

Before I knew what had happened, I was almost back to where I'd started. 

The only consolation that I had was that this time I knew what worked with my body.  I know that I need to do cardio 3-5 times a week and eat fewer carbs. 

So far, the exercising has been great.  I started taking a Tai Chi class twice a week, and I love it!  It's been really good for boosting my strength and flexibility. I also do an in-home cardio program that really helps get my heart rate up and work my legs, arms, and core. 

The eating... it's getting there.  I'm definitely making better choices, but I'm not making the best choices that I could be making.  Summer is here now, and I always eat better in the summer with all the fresh food from the garden. 

I know that I have several months left in my journey, but I'm already down a little more than 20 pounds.  I'm down one size in my shirts, and I could probably move down a size in my jeans.

Since I've struggled with my weight all of my life, I love watching reality TV that shows people going through the same thing.  It's so inspiring to see their successes.  That's why I've been watching The Big Fat Truth on Z Living on Sundays at 8 EST/PST.

In The Big Fat Truth, producer JD Roth helps real people who struggle with their weight.  He gives them the tools and encouragement that they need to make big changes. 

You've probably seen JD Roth before.  He was an actor in his younger days, and now he's the executive producer and host of The Big Fat Truth
