The Busy Mom's Guide to Staying Organized

Sometimes I'm amazed at everything that I pack in to a day.  I homeschool my kids, work from home, and volunteer in the community.  Lately, I've been making some major life changes in that I'm eating healthier and working out.  Obviously, working out takes time, but even eating better takes extra time because I have to meal plan and do more meal prep work.  Getting healthy is important to me, so I am making time for it, but I still need to find ways to make my life easier and manage my time better so I don't feel the time strain as much.  Here's how I manage to keep my life somewhat organized so I have time each day to tackle my to do lists.

Use a Planner

This is my biggest tip for getting organized.  I would be lost without my planner, and no one would ever get to where they needed to be each day.  Since my kids are homeschooled, I schedule their appointments during the day where there's more availability and my middle son has three to four therapy sessions per week.  Sometimes it feels like I'm piecing together a puzzle to fit it all in, and I could never do it without a paper planner.

Use Your Phone

I love my iPhone for working and playing, and now I use it to keep me organized.  I set reminders for important meetings or even to remind me to get dinner in the slow cooker in the morning.  I've even been known to ask Siri to remind me to do something in 10 minutes if my brain is particularly frazzled that day.
 
I keep paper lists in my planner, and I also keep lists on my phone.  I used to use paper lists, but then I would stop at the store unexpectedly and not have my list.  Now I always have my grocery list with me just in case.  This helps cuts down on trips to the store, which saves even more time.

Meal Plan

Even though I'm an organized person with lists and spreadsheets galore, I do not like to meal plan.  However, I know that I need to do it or we won't be eating dinner a few nights a week.  After I plan our meals, I go shopping for everything that I need.  Our grocery budget has gone down, and I've eliminated special trips to the store, saving even more time.  For meals that freeze well, I double the recipe and freeze half for dinner in a few weeks.
 
In addition to planning our dinners, I also plan my lunches and snacks.  I've been buying the new Special K Nourish Bites.  They have a resealable pouch, so I can put them in my bag when I leave the house.  This week, I'm enjoying the dark chocolate pistachio bites.  They're made with real pistachios, and the bites are perfect for on the go snacking or snacking at my desk.  Now I can keep on with my day without stopping, so I can stay on track with my to do list.  Whether I'm driving my son to therapy, running errands, or working at home on my laptop, I have the stamina to keep my family and my home running smoothly.  I have many things to worry about in a day, so I'm glad that my snacks aren't one of them.

Clean Daily

I have to clean every day or I get overwhelmed.  Each day, I clean one room of the house.  In the evening, we keep the main living areas straightened up.  To keep clutter to a minimum, I keep a basket in my bedroom for items to donate.  When it's full, I put it in the car to drop off the next time I drive by the thrift store.  Reducing clutter really helps streamline my cleaning, which saves time.

Find Time to Unwind


If I don't have time to unwind, I get flustered and I'm not as productive as I should be.  I have an office in our local community center.  When I'm there, I can work uninterrupted so I can get more work than I would at home in the same amount of time.  I also have a strict bed time for the kids because I need quiet time at night.  

With my crazy schedule, I can't imagine how chaotic my life would be if I weren't so organized.  I feel like I'm always on the go between therapy sessions, appointments, and the kids' activities.  I've learned how to prioritize so I have time to do the things that I want to do.  And I'm thankful for Special K Nourish Bites to keep me fueled while I'm on the go.
