Sugar is delicious, but not so great for our health. It’s normal to crave it sometimes, but there’s no need to reach for the sugar bowl every time you have a hankering to satisfy your sweet tooth. Mother Nature has provided several natural sugar substitutes to common white sucrose, and it’s worth experimenting with these other options. 1. Honey


Raw, organic, local honey is the absolute best choice. Don’t grab any old honey bear bottle off the supermarket shelf. A lot of conventional honey products are just that – products. They may not even contain actual honey, and if not organic, can contain pesticides as well. A lot of people already use honey in their tea, but try it as a sugar alternative in coffee along with heavy whipping cream and you’ll be delighted with the result. Honey is also known to contain medicinal properties that can soothe sore throats and help alleviate seasonal allergy symptoms.

2. Blackstrap Molasses


Rich in minerals, vitamins, and nutrients, blackstrap molasses is a healthier choice when it comes to sweeteners. Once again, avoid pesticides by choosing organic molasses. This sweetener is great in baking, for roasting vegetables, and for making dressings, marinades, and glazes. Also, try it in oatmeal or yogurt and see what you think!

3. Monk Fruit 


Originating from Southeast Asia, monk fruit is 150-200 times sweeter than table sugar, so a little goes a long way. This zero calorie sweetener is a great substitute for the toxic chemical sugar substitutes that are on the market today. 

4. Maple Syrup


Maple syrup is probably the most common of the natural sugar substitutes.  It is categorized by color. It’s available in Golden, Amber, Dark, and Very Dark. The lighter the syrup, the less flavor it has. This syrup used to be classified as “grade A”. The darker syrup, or what used to be “grade B”, is more flavorful. Organic is the way to go to avoid any undesirable pesticide and fertilizer contamination. 


5. Fruit/Fruit Juice 


The benefit of sweetening food with fruit and fruit juice is that you can infuse the flavor of it into your food. Cereal topped with sliced bananas is divine, and creating a pie crust with dates is genius. And yep, you guessed it, choose organic. 

Don’t despair over the demise of sugar use in your house; there are plenty of substitutes to choose from. If you have a favorite sweet recipe that does call for sugar, search online to see if you can use one of the aforementioned sugar alternatives instead. 

Just remember not to overdo it. Too much of a good thing can be a not-so-good thing. Natural or not, 
sweeteners of any kind can still stimulate cravings for more sweet and affect blood sugar levels. As 
always, use sense when eating, and be aware of what you’re consuming. Regardless of which sugar 
substitute you choose, ditching the sucrose is always a good idea. A life without sweetness is not worth living, so experiment with healthier options to see what works for you.
