Homemade Peppermint Lip Balm Recipe

How to make an easy DIY peppermint lip balm recipe. This moisturizes your lips and helps protect them from future damage from cold air.

Peppermint Lip Balm Recipe

I love the cool tingle of peppermint lip balm, especially in the winter.  Peppermint essential oil is said to help heal chapped lips, so this is really a great recipe for winter.

My kids constantly lip their lips, no matter how many times I tell them that this is what causes the red, chapped lips!

This DIY peppermint lip balm recipe helps create a barrier while it heals and protects.  I usually make a double batch of this so we can stash them all over the house for the kids.

Do your kids lose lip balm as often as mine do?  I have no idea where it goes.  It's there one day, gone the next, and back again the next day.

Can You Use Essential Oils in Lip Balm?

Yes, you can use essential oils to make an essential oil lip balm recipe. I used peppermint essential oil for this homemade peppermint lip balm recipe.

One thing to keep in mind is that you will have to dilute the essential oils to no more than 1 to 2 percent.  You can use this essential oil dilution chart to help you formulate recipes.

Some essential oils, mostly citrus oils, can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage.  However, peppermint essential oil doesn't affect your skin like that.  But do keep this in mind when making an essential oil lip balm recipe.

Is Peppermint Good for Lip Balm?

Yes, not only does peppermint taste and smell great, but it's also good for your skin.  Peppermint naturally plumps your lips temporarily, too, which is why many people use it for an essential oil lip balm recipe.

Can I Put Peppermint Oil on my Lips?

Yes, peppermint essential oil is skin safe.  However, it must be diluted in a carrier oil like in this DIY peppermint lip balm recipe.

Which Carrier Oil is Good for Lip Balm?

I used sweet almond oil, which is an excellent all purpose carrier oil to make my natural peppermint lip balm.  It has vitamins to nourish your skin while it moisturizes.

You can also use one of the following carrier oils:

Does Homemade Peppermint Lip Balm Expire?

Yes, a DIY peppermint lip balm can expire.  Carrier oils have a shelf life, and they can go rancid in a natural peppermint lip balm.  Your homemade peppermint lip balm should last for about 6 months.

DIY Peppermint Lip Balm Benefits

Beeswax

Beeswax serves two purposes in a lip balm.  First, it hardens the recipe.  Even with the butters and solid coconut oil, this would be a very soft lip balm.

Secondly, it helps form a protective barrier on top of your lips.  This prevents moisture loss, and it traps the other ingredients next to your skin so they can work their magic.

Organic Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is amazing for your lips.  In a pinch, I'll use plain coconut oil on my lips when they are really dry.

Coconut oil is very moisturizing.  It's high in fats that offer deep moisturization for your lips

Butters

I prefer to use shea butter, but you can also use cocoa butter.  Shea butter is softer than cooca butter.  If you use cocoa butter, use less beeswax.

Both butters are high in fats to moisturize your lips.  They also have vitamins to nourish your lips.
Cocoa butter has a slight cocoa odor unless you get deodorized cocoa butter.

Sweet Almond Oil

Sweet almond oil is a great all purpose carrier oil.  It's high in vitamins A and E to nourish your lips and fatty acids to moisturize.

It's a lighter oil, so it soaks in quickly.  For very chapped lips, I really like chia seed oil.  It's heavier, but it feels amazing on your lips.

Peppermint Essential Oil

I used peppermint essential oil to make my essential oil lip balm recipe because it smells and tastes great.  It's also said to promote healing for dry or chapped lips.

The natural menthol in peppermint is soothing.  If your lips tingle or hurt from being dry, peppermint essential oil can feel really good on your lips.

How Do You Make Peppermint Lip Balm?

Step #1

If you don't have a double boiler, you can easily make one by placing a Pyrex measuring cup in a saucepan half full of water. You need to lift up the measuring cup so it's not sitting on the heat source. I use a canning jar ring.

Step #2

Melt the beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, and sweet almond oil over medium to low heat in the double boiler until melted.

Step #3

Remove from heat and stir well.

Step #4

Add peppermint essential oil and stir well.

Step #5

Pour in to lip balm tubes or lip balm pots. Let cool for 24 hours before capping.

This peppermint lip balm recipe will make 10-12 lip balm tubes or about 5 one inch lip balm pots worth of product.
