DIY Applesauce and Wheat Germ Moisturizing Mask Recipe



I love this mask for two reasons:  It is soothing on sunburned skin and because I can so much applesauce each year.  You're supposed to use fresh applesauce, but I use my home canned or frozen applesauce.  I don't add sugar or anything except water and apples, so it is safe.  Be careful using store bought applesauce because many varieties have high fructose corn syrup and sugar added.  Look for a natural version that contains only water and apples.  Making your own is even better.

To make applesauce, peel, core, and seed the apples.  Simmer in a little bit of water until mushy and mash with a fork or run in the food processor.  If you have a food mill, it makes it even easier to make your own applesauce!

This moisturizing face mask is perfect for dry or sensitive skin.  It's also very soothing for sunburned or wind damaged skin.

What You Need

Directions
  1. Mix applesauce and wheat germ and let sit for 5 minutes.  Do not mix the oil in yet.
  2. Spread the applesauce and wheat germ mixture on your face.  This mask can get messy, so you'll want to pull your hair back before you apply it.
  3. Lie down on a towel and let the mask sit for 20 to 30 minutes.
  4. Rinse well.
  5. Follow by applying the oil to your face and neck.  Massage the oil in to your skin for several minutes.  Remove excess oil with a tissue.

Fisherman Soap Recipe Perfect for Father's Day - No Lye!

Waaaaaay back in the day, I sold bath and body products.  I made soap, lip balm, lotion, and bath salts on eBay and locally.  This was back before Etsy and just after Etsy opened, so eBay and my own website were my only options.  My husband was a mechanic at a marine dealership.  I heard about this fisherman soap, and who better to test it than a bunch of fishermen at the shop?

I made a few bars and gave out some samples.  Within a few weeks, I had several orders.  I filled those and made more for the shelf.  This stuff sold better than any other product that I had!

This soap naturally masks the human smell from your hands.  Use it before touching bait to attract more fish.  Many men also use it before hunting so the animals can't smell them in the woods.

This recipe doesn't use lye because it uses a soap base.  If you've never made soap, you can find complete directions here.

What You Need

Directions

  1. Chunk the soap in to 1" pieces and place in double boiler.  Add beeswax pellets.  Melt on medium low heat until completely melted.  
  2. Stir well and add jojoba oil food coloring if desired.
  3. Let cool until a skin starts to form on top of the soap.
  4. Add anise essential oil and stir.
  5. Pour in to molds and let cool.
  6. When cool, remove from molds and wrap in plastic wrap.
Do not use anise essential oil if you are pregnant.  

You can use any soap base.  I like the one that I linked because it has a little boost of moisturizer.  You could skip the beeswax, but it makes a harder bar.  Since most men store the soap with their tackle, it helps protect it while it gets tossed around.

How to Get Healthy Hair - Naturally!

I used to keep my hair pretty short because  it would get damaged fairly quickly.  Curly hair that is damaged means lots of unruly, frizzy curls, which is not an attractive sight!  I have my hair a little longer now, thanks to these tips on how to get healthy hair naturally.  Some of these give you instant gratification, but most take weeks or months to see a difference.

Unfortunately, there's no way to permanently repair damaged hair.  Once the hair shaft is open, it remains open.  You'll have to cut it off to get rid of the damaged hair.  However, you can use products to close the shaft so hair appears healthy for days or weeks.  While you are doing this, you should also take very good care of new hair growth so it is healthy as it grows.

How to Get Healthy Hair

1.  Hair Masks

Repeated damage can cause the hair shaft to open.  This makes hair dull and look damaged.  Hair masks work by nourishing the hair and temporarily closing the hair shaft.  You will need to do a hair mask once a week for best results.  Try this pumpkin hair mask or this hair mask for damaged hair.

2.  Heat Protection

Heat from hair dryers, curling irons, and straighteners can damage your hair quickly.  Use a heat protection spray or make your own before using any heat on your hair.  It's best to avoid the hair dryer completely and let hair air dry.  If you have to use a hair dryer, hold it away from your hair and use a cool or warm setting.

3.  Brushing

Wet hair is more likely to break, so do not use a brush on wet hair.  Use a leave-in conditioner and a wide tooth comb to get rid of tangles or wait until hair is completely dry before you brush it.

4.  Biotin


Biotin, also known as B7, is a vitamin that can help you get healthier hair and nails.  Normally, your body produces enough Biotin to keep your hair and nails healthy, but some people do not produce enough.  For these people, adding a Biotin supplement can help get healthy hair and nails.  Signs of a Biotin deficiency can include lethargy, dermatitis, hallucination, numb or tingling hands and feet, and conjunctivitis.

Eu Natural provided me with a bottle of Biotin to try.  Since the supplement works by encouraging new cell growth, it won't repair your existing damaged hair.  However, it will help new hair grow quicker and healthier.  It took about two weeks to notice a difference in my hair, but I did see a difference.  My nails are also growing faster!

5.  Styling Products

Styling products can damage your hair and cause product built up.  When product gets built up on your hair, it makes it look unhealthy and damaged.  Try to only use products four times a week to protect your hair and use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove product build up.  You can also add a teaspoon of baking soda to your regular shampoo once a week to dissolve products and get your hair and scalp clean.

6.  Eat Healthy

Eating a balanced, healthy diet will help your hair grow in beautifully.  Try to eat plenty of protein, zinc, vitamins, and minerals every day.  Eat blueberries, spinach, sweet potatoes, yogurt, walnuts, and salmon for beautiful, healthy hair.

Peaches and Cream Glow Facial Mask for Dry, Sensitive Skin


I think there are few things that smell better than peaches.  We have a large orchard with several kinds of peach trees.  I can them in slices and pie filling, but I do save a few for this peaches and cream glow facial mask.  This smells amazing, so it is one of my favorite DIY beauty mask recipes.  You might be tempted to taste a spoonful - or two or ten - before you use it.  Go ahead.  It's perfectly safe!

This is a nourishing facial mask, and it's great dry, normal, or sensitive skin.  This makes one treatment.  Do not store leftovers.  Eat them instead!

This is one of the easiest face masks to make.  It takes just a few minutes to make it, and the ingredients are easy to find in any grocery store.  You'll want to use a very ripe peach so it's easier to mash.

Peach and Cream Glow Facial Mask

What You Need

  • 1/2 of a very ripe small peach
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream
  • mortar and pestle 
  • glass bowl
Directions
  1. Use a mortar and pestle to mash the peach.  You can also use a fork and glass bowl, but I find that the mortar and pestle works better.
  2. Add the cream and mix well.
  3. Use your fingers to spread on your face and neck.
  4. Lie down and let sit for 30 minutes before rinsing.
The peaches and cream glow facial mask is runny, so put a towel on your pillow before you lie down.

DIY Deep Pore Cleaner Mask Recipe


If you have large pores, you can probably blame your parents.  Unfortunately, nothing can permanently shrink pore size, but you can make them appear smaller.  Scrubbing your face with gentle exfoliators helps remove dead skin cells and oil that collect in your pores.  When your pores are clean, they look smaller.  I usually have to use a deep pore cleaner recipe like this one once a week, but you might to use it more often.
Just be careful not to do too much at a time.  If you exfoliate, wait a day or two before you use a mask.  Don't do both on the same day because you could irritate your skin.

Personally, I like using the tomato.  But I will use the cucumber if I have it for another recipe.  Cucumber are calming, so they are better if you have sensitive skin.

This mask is very soothing and has a slight astringent, so it will remove excess oil.  You can also use this as a scrub too.

DIY Deep Pore Cleaner Recipe

What You Need

Directions
  1. Place tomato or cucumber in blender with a tablespoon of water.  Blend until the mixture is smooth.
  2. Strain the mixture and save the liquid.  
  3. Combine the liquid from the tomato or cucumber with the meals and oils to form a paste.
  4. Spread on your face and neck as thick as possible.  Let sit for 20 minutes before rinsing.

I've been a little quiet on social media and my blog this week.  I'm a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout leader, and this was our bridging over and crossover week.  As much as I love those kids, I am happy to be done with both for the year.  My daughter is now a Brownie, and my son is a Bear.  I am a little sad that we only have three years of Cubs left, but that makes a total of 9 years as a leader!

How to Get Rid of Dry, Cracked Heels


It's time for flip flops and sandals! I know my feet could use some attention after the long winter, how about yours? Dry, cracked heels aren't just unattractive--they can also let bacteria in to the body. Although not usually a medical concern, you'll feel better knowing that your feet are in top shape for summer. Here's not to safely and effectively remove dead skin and moisturize your feet.

You might need to do this once a week until your feet are looking good. After that, moisturize daily. Dry winter air is what causes dry, cracked heels, but wearing sandals and open back shoes in the summer can also cause your skin to get cracked.

Exfoliate

To find the healthy skin on your heels, you need to get rid of the dead skin.  If you haven't taken care of your feet in a while, you might need to do this twice a few days apart.  

First soak your feet in warm water.  Add baking soda to deodorize and soften your skin.  Let your feet soak until the water is cool and dry off your feet.  

Next, use a foot file to slough off dead skin cells.  Be careful not to push too hard and take off good skin.  If your feet have a lot of calluses, you won't be able to get all of the dead skin off the first time.  Just get what you can and do it again in a week.  

Next, it's time to scrub.  Make your own scrub like this avocado foot scrub or use 1/4 cup white sugar and 2 tablespoons olive oil.  Scrub your heels, feet, and even in between your toes.  Wash your feet with soapy water and pat dry.

Moisturize

After you've taken the dead skin off, it's time to moisturize.  You could skip the foot file and scrub, but the lotion won't be as effective.  You want to use a thick, creamy lotion with aloe vera, lanolin, or shea butter.   

If you want to make your own lotion, try this Peppermint Foot Lotion recipe. I really love this Foot Repair Lotion from Sally Henson. It has tea tree oil it, so it kills bacteria and fungi that can cause odors.

Put the lotion on at night and wear an old pair of socks to bed. This will help trap the lotion against your skin, which will give you better results.

I use a lotion every day for maintenance. Once your feet are soft and your dry, cracked heels are gone, you can use just about any lotion. If you notice that your skin is getting tough, just exfoliate and use a creamy moisturizer like the ones I mentioned above.
